Baysox Score Comeback Win Over Aeros

Baysox 2013IMG_9594Despite trailing 5-1 early, the Baysox (41-39) offense got hot late in the game, scoring seven runs in the final four innings on the way to a 10-6 win over the Akron Aeros (39-45) Tuesday evening. The win is the team’s fourth in a row and put the Baysox two games over .500 for the first time since they were 10-8 on April 21.

“The key was keeping it close, keeping it manageable,” said Manager Gary Kendall. “Eduardo [Rodriguez] had some good innings and he had some bad innings and he gave up that home run to [Carlos] Moncrief that put us down 5-2. Then Niuman [Romero] puts one out of the ballpark to keep us in the ballgame and we start putting some hits together. It seemed to be contagious and then we get that big hit from Trayvon [Robinson] that gave us a little cushion.”

Baysox left-handed starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez made his Double-A debut Tuesday, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking two in the no decision.

Akron jumped out to another early lead in the top of the first inning against Rodriguez. Ronny Rodriguez hit a one out single to center field and Tyler Holt followed with a walk. Jesus Aguilar singled to right field to bring home one run and then Carlos Moncrief singled to center field to bring home a second run and give the Aeros a 2-0 lead.

The Baysox got one run back in the bottom of the first against Akron starter Toru Murata. Catcher Caleb Joseph drew a two-out walk and scored from first on a double to center field from designated hitter Seth Loman to make the score 2-1.

The Aeros added another run in the top of the third inning. Rodriguez hit a lead off single to right field and moved to third on a double to left field by Holt before scoring on a Moncrief sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1.

Bowie cut into the lead with another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Third baseman Garabez Rosa doubled to left field and scored on a two-out single to center field from second baseman Josh Horton to make the score 3-2.

Akron extended the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Holt hit a one out double to right field and Moncrief hit a two-out home run to center field to give the Aeros a 5-2 lead.

The Baysox again got a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning when shortstop Niuman Romero hit a solo home run to center field to make the score 5-3.

Bowie stormed back to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning against J.D. Reichenbach. First baseman Aaron Baker and Horton hit back-to-back one out singles and left fielder Kyle Hudson drew a walk to load the bases. Right fielder Chris Pettit walked to bring home a run and Shawn Armstrong then replaced Reichenbach on the mound. Center fielder Trayvon Robinson hit a bases clearing double to left field to give the Baysox a 7-5 lead.

“That was a huge situation,” Robinson said. “It has been tough on me all year hitting in scoring position. I know I can hit with guys in scoring position, but I think I have been trying to do too much and I think that was one of my best at-bats all year. I was just trying not to do too much and put the ball in play, knowing that I can hit the ball hard if I get a good pitch and don’t miss.

Akron cut the Baysox lead to one in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Oliver Drake. Chris Wallace hit a lead off double to center field and Kyle Bellows brought him home with a one-out double to left field that made the score 7-6.

The Baysox added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against Akron reliever Jose Flores. Hudson drew a lead off walk and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Pettit. Hudson stole third base and then scored on a Robinson fielder’s choice and missed catch error on the catcher. Romero then drew a walk and Robinson moved to third base on a Joseph fly out. Loman plated Robinson with a single to left field and Rosa brought home another run with a single to right field that made the score 10-6.

Reliever Matt Bischoff pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit while striking out two in the win. Drake pitched one inning and allowed one run on two hits. Lefty Chris Petrini pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

Reichenbach took the loss for Akron, allowing four runs on two hits and two walks on one-third of an inning.

RHP Tyler Wilson takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team plays the final game in a three game home series with the Akron Aeros. He will be opposed by LHP Matt Packer (6-5, 2.56).

The Baysox are home Wednesday, July 3 for the Red, White & Boom Independence Day Celebration beginning at 6:35. The team then departs on a five day, seven game road trip to Harrisburg leading up to the All-Star Break Tuesday, July 9.
