Living With Chronic Disease, 2 Free Workshops

countysealTwo free workshops, “Living Well with Chronic Conditions” and “Living Well with Diabetes,” will be offered in June and July by the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland.  Adults 18 and older are welcome to attend.

According to Pam Toomey, Living Well Coordinator at the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities, “a chronic disease is a medical condition that can cause suffering and loss of physical abilities over many years.”  A chronic condition can be anything from high blood pressure to arthritis, COPD, heart disease, obesity and/or chronic pain.  The “Living Well with Chronic Conditions” workshop teaches participants how to manage the symptoms that go along with a chronic disease such as stress, anxiety, fatigue and pain.  This workshop also focuses on appropriate exercise techniques, as well as nutrition, medication usage and how to communicate more effectively with physicians.

“Living Well with Diabetes” is appropriate for participants with pre-diabetes, Type 1 diabetes or Type 2 diabetes.  This program teaches participants how to manage their blood sugar levels as well as provides information about reading nutrition labels, counting carbohydrates, appropriate exercise, and symptoms associated with both high and low blood sugar levels.

Registration is underway now for both six-week workshops.  Each workshop will be held in the Anne Arundel Medical Center’s Health Sciences Pavilion, 2000 Medical Parkway, Annapolis, Maryland 21401.

The “Living Well with Chronic Conditions” workshop will take place on Thursday afternoons beginning July 11.  Classes will be held on July 11, 18 and 25, and August 1, 8 and 15.  All classes will be held from 1:00–3:30 PM.

The “Living Well with Diabetes” workshop will be held Tuesday mornings beginning July 9.  Classes will be held on July 9, 16, 23 and 30, and August 6 and 13 from 9:30–12 noon.
