Dong Folk Chorus To Perform At City Dock

Dong photoThe Dong Folk Chorus will perform on Monday, July 1, 2013 at 3:50 PM at the Susan Campbell Park on the Annapolis City Docks. The choir is comprised of seven Dong children from ages 8 to 15 accompanied by seven young adult singers. The Dong people from southwest China are one of China’s 56 acknowledged ethnic minorities. Dong presence traces back to the Qing Dynasty(221-2016 BC). The remoteness of their villages has accounted for the remarkable preservation of their distinctive music and culture. The Dong Folk Singing has been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. The performance is free and open to the public.

Dong folk music includes solo and choral genres. They cover a wide range of subject matter including children’s songs, drinking songs, ritual courtship and solemn historical narratives.

The Chorus is brought to Annapolis by World Artists Experiences in partnership with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China. They will be hosted with families in the Annapolis area. The group will also perform at the Smithsonian Institution, in Salisbury and Ocean City, Maryland, as well as their Annapolis experiences. World Artists Experiences is a non-profit organization which bridges international understanding through cultural and citizen diplomacy.
