Baysox Blow 9th Inning Lead

BaysoxAfter rallying from six runs down earlier in the game, the Baysox (28-31) bullpen surrendered a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning en route to an 11-10 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats (31-32) Sunday afternoon.

In the three game series, the Baysox scored 24 total runs but also allowed 26 runs. Each team batted around the order once during the game Sunday, as the Rock Cats scored six runs in the fifth and the Baysox scored five in the sixth.

“There were so many good things out there today,” Kendall said. “You fall behind by so many runs, but you battle back and take a lead. Offensively we are doing a lot of good things as a group and hopefully that continues.”

Right fielder Henry Urrutia put the Baysox out in front early with a two-out solo home run against New Britain starter D.J. Baxendale in the bottom of the first inning to make the score 1-0.

Third baseman Brandon Waring led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to left field to give the Baysox a 2-0 lead.

The Baysox added to the lead again in the bottom of the third inning. Shortstop Niuman Romero, Urrutia and catcher Caleb Joseph hit consecutive one out singles to load the bases and Waring drew a walk to bring in one run and make the score 3-0.

New Britain came back to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning against Baysox starter Jake Pettit. Danny Santana hit a lead off home run to left-center field for the Rock Cats first hit of the game and James Beresford drew a walk. Josmil Pinto doubled to left field to move Beresford to third base where he scored on a sacrifice fly by Reynaldo Rodriguez. With two outs, Jordan Parraz singled to left field to plate Pinto and tie the game 3-3.

The Rock Cats exploded for six runs to take a 9-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Curt Smith hit a lead off double to center field and Chris Pettit followed with a walk. Santana moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt and Smith scored on a passed ball. Beresford then drew the second walk of the inning and reliever Clay Schrader replaced Pettit on the mound. With two outs, Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a three-run home run and Nate Hanson kept things going with a double to left field. Hanson advanced on a wild pitch and Jordan Parraz then drew a walk. Both runners scored on a fielding error by center fielder Steven Bumbry to finish out the big inning.

The Baysox got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Romero drew a lead off walk and Joseph hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to make the score 9-5.

Bowie came fighting back to retake the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning against Rock Cats reliever Cole Johnson. Left fielder Garabez Rosa hit a lead off single to right field and Bumbry followed with a walk. Second baseman Ty Kelly then singled to load the bases and Romero followed with another single that scored two runs. A.J. Achter then replaced Johnson on the mound and immediately surrendered another single to Urrutia that brought Kelly home. Joseph hit the fourth consecutive single to load the bases and Waring drew his second bases loaded walk of the game to bring home a run. With first baseman Aaron Baker batting, a passed ball brought home the final run of the inning to make the score 10-9 Baysox.

The Rock Cats took the lead for good against reliever Zech Zinicola in the top of the ninth inning. Rodriguez hit a one out infield single to shortstop and scored after a wild pitch and two base error by Joseph when the ball bounced into the outfield after an attempt at second base. Hanson followed with a solo home run to give New Britain the 11-10 lead.

Pettit took a no decision for the Baysox, pitching four and one-third innings and allowing six runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five. Schrader pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk while striking out one batter. Left-handed reliever Chris Petrini pitched two and one-third scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three while walking one. Zinicola pitched one and two-thirds innings and allowed two runs on two hits in the blown save and loss.

Reliever Edgar Ibarra earned the win for New Britain, pitching a scoreless eighth inning and allowing one hit while striking out two and walking one. Bobby Lanigan earned the save for New Britain, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

RHP Devin Jones (3-2, 4.68) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team begins a three game road series with the Reading Fightin Phils. He will be opposed by LHP Austin Wright (0-3, 11.51).

The Baysox depart for a six game road trip with stops in Reading and Binghamton Tuesday before returning home for a six game series Tuesday, June 18.
