Chesapeake Bay Trust Earns 4 Star Rating

image003-1The Chesapeake Bay Trust ranks in the top 1% of charities nationwide according to Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest independent evaluator of charities.  For eleven consecutive years, the Trust has received a 4-star rating, the highest available for a nonprofit organization, for its sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.  According to Charity Navigator evaluators, only 1% of the charities rated have received at least eleven consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Chesapeake Bay Trust outperforms most other charities in America.

“The Chesapeake Bay Trust prides itself on sound fiscal management and the integrity of its grant-making programs and special initiatives,” said Jana Davis, executive director of the Chesapeake Bay Trust. “We are so pleased to be recognized by Charity Navigator as an ‘exceptional’ charity for our work to restore the Chesapeake Bay, its rivers and streams, and improve local communities.”

CB TrustThe Chesapeake Bay Trust is a nonprofit, grant-making organization dedicated to improving the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers through environmental education, community outreach and Bay restoration.  Since 1985, the Trust has awarded more than $50 million in grants to organizations, schools, and community groups to restore Maryland’s shorelines, educate schoolchildren about the environment, green local neighborhoods and clean-up local rivers and streams. In 2012, the Trust awarded $5.8 million in grants that engaged over 120,000 students, teachers and volunteers who removed 70 tons of trash from Maryland streams and rivers, planted 180,000 native plants and trees, and restored 44 acres of wetlands, oyster reefs and streamside buffers.

The Chesapeake Bay Trust is supported by the sale of the Maryland Treasure the Chesapeake license plate, donations to the Chesapeake Bay and Endangered Species Fund on the Maryland State income tax form, donations from individuals and corporations, and partnerships with private foundations and federal and state agencies. Fully 90 percent of the Trust’s expenditures are directed to its Chesapeake Bay restoration and education programs.
