clip_image002On Saturday, June 1, nearly three thousand women will hit the streets of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County for the sixth running of the Muscle Milk Light ZOOMA Annapolis Women’s Half Marathon & 10K. The race starts at 7am at the Navy Marine Corp Stadium. Registration is still open for this year’s event, which is capped at 4,000.

“ZOOMA was at the leading edge of women’s running events,” said Brae Blackley, Founder & Executive Director of ZOOMA Women’s Race Series. “In 2008, the area’s first women’s distance event took place here in Annapolis, and we are psyched to be back for our sixth year in 2013. I think its safe to say that ZOOMA has become a tradition in Annapolis.”

Indeed, not only in Annapolis, but women’s running across the nation has experienced a boom. In 2012, there were more than 200 “women-only” events in the U.S., according to Running USA (runningusa.org), and there were 7.6 million women race finishers in 2012, comprising 55% of event fields.  Annually, the number of women finishers has increased by double-digit percentages since 1990, proving that, now more than ever before, women really do “run” races.

ZOOMA Annapolis combines a challenging half marathon or 10K race with a fun weekend full of activities, including a Fitness Expo and “Mocktail Hour” at the Loews Annapolis Hotel on Friday evening and a post-race festival at Navy Stadium.  All finishers receive a custom-designed ZOOMA necklace and a swag bag including a yoga mat, water bottle, and flattering technical tee.  The post-race party at Navy Stadium invites women to celebrate their accomplishments with wine, live music, shopping, massage and recovery yoga. The Loews Annapolis Hotel, which serves as “host hotel” for the fit girlfriends’ getaway, is sold out on race weekend.

ZOOMA’s national charity partner is Every Mother Counts, a campaign founded by Christy Turlington Burns that is dedicated to raising awareness for maternal health around the world.  Nearly 300 runners have registered as fundraisers for EMC at ZOOMA Annapolis.

From seasoned competitors to new runners, ZOOMA Annapolis is open to all ages and abilities, and at least 25% of the ZOOMA Annapolis field is composed of beginning runners. Online registration and event details can be found at the ZOOMA Annapolis website at http://www.zoomarun.com/annapolis.
