After President Barack Obama addressed the graduating midshipmen at the 2013 Graduation of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, the ceremony was concluded steeped in tradition. After a rendition of the school song, Blue and Gold, the departing class and the remaining classes reciprocally cheer for each other. On the third cheer–the newly commissioned Ensigns and 2nd Lieutenants toss their midshipman covers into the air. The hats are collected by children who rush the field. The graduating mids usually leave a note in their hat and sometimes money.
