Girls On The Run To Host 8th Annual Spring 5K At AACC

bgcaa5KGirls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake will hold its 8th Annual Spring 5K on Saturday, May 18th at 9:00 a.m. at Anne Arundel Community College  (101 College Parkway, Arnold, MD). The run is open to anyone in the community and registration is available online at: www.gotrchesapeake.org.  The cost to participate is $20 in advance and $25 on Run Day.  Current participants in the Girls on the Run program run for free.

Approximately 1,500 people, 700 of whom are 3rd-8th graders in Girls on the Run, are expected to run in this year’s 5K.  The event is the culmination and celebration of the 10-week long Girls on the Run program that teaches girls about physical fitness while building self-esteem and character.   As part of the program, Girls on the Run participants from Calvert and Anne Arundel Counties, Baltimore City, and Queen Anne’s county have been preparing for this 5K by training twice a week with volunteer coaches.

“Watching hundreds of girls cross the finish line—from the first one to the last—and knowing they have worked so hard to accomplish this feat is such a rewarding experience,” said Executive Director Lara Mish.  “To have the community come out and celebrate with us is wonderful.”

This year’s family-friendly run will stay on the grounds of the AACC campus.  All participants will receive a run t-shirt and post-run water and food will be provided.

National sponsors include Athleta, Secret, and Goodie.  Local sponsors currently include the Ravens Act Foundation, Annapolis Triathlon-Club, Turning Point Sports, and Anne Arundel Women Giving Together, Mulrenin and Associates, and Menchies.  Sponsorship opportunities are still available. All proceeds support Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake and its mission to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running.

Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake is an after school program for girls in grades 3 through 8 that uses the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Established in 2005, Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake began its program with 20 girls. Today, GOTR Greater Chesapeake serves more than 700 girls from across Anne Arundel and Calvert Counties, Baltimore City, and Queen Anne’s County.  The 10-week program includes twice-weekly lessons led by more than 150 volunteer coaches, who help the girls train for a 5K walk/run, and also mentor the girls as they discuss important issues such as building positive self-esteem and adopting healthy lifestyles.  The organization’s goal is to engage the entire community to positively impact the health and well-being of the girls and the coaches who serve them.
