Baysox Give Up Big Lead To Squirrels

BaysoxThe Bowie Baysox (1-4) scored five runs in the top of the first inning, but could not hold on as they fell to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (4-1) 12-10 in a back and forth offensive battle on Monday night.

The Baysox jumped out to the early lead with a five run top half of the first inning.  With two on, Lew Ford got the scoring started with an RBI double to left field.  Caleb Joseph reached on an error and on the play Ty Kelly scored.  Zelous Wheeler then knocked in Ford with an RBI single.  Garabez Rosa capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run single that made the score 5-0.

In the bottom of the first inning, Julio Rodriguez walked the first two batters of the inning on eight pitches.  Then on ball four to Joe Panik, Rodriguez threw a wild pitch that allowed a run to score.  With two outs in the inning, Adam Duvall blasted a three-run home to cut the lead to 5-4.

The Baysox got two runs back in the second inning.  Luis Martinez singled and Xavier Avery doubled to put to runners in scoring position.  Kyle Hudson knocked in Martinez with a ground out to second and then Kelly hit an RBI single that extended the lead to 7-4.

Jarrett Parker cut the lead to one run in the third inning with a two-run double that made the score 7-6.

In the fourth inning, the Baysox added three more runs.  Martinez singled and Avery doubled to start the inning, then Hudson knocked in Martinez with an infield single.  Ty Kelly followed with an RBI groundout and Caleb Joseph hit an RBI double to make the score 10-6.

Sean Gleason entered the game in the third inning and retired the first eight batters that he faced.  With one out in the sixth, Parker ended that streak with a solo home run to cut the lead to 10-7.

The Squirrels took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Ehire Adrianza reached on an error to start the inning and then scored on an RBI double by Panik.  Jason Gurka entered the game and allowed the first batter he faced to single then got a double play that resulted in a run for the Squirrels.  The next two batters singled and then Susac gave them their first lead with a two-run double to make the score 11-10.

Adrianza added one more run with a solo home run to start the eighth inning and capped the scoring at 12-10.

Neither starter made it out of the third inning or factored into the decision.  Julio Rodriguez went 2.2 innings and allowed six runs on two hits with two strikeouts and seven walks.  Ryan Bradley would go just two innings and allow seven runs on nine hits in his Double-A debut.

Tom Vessella got the win pitching three shutout innings and then Daryl Maday nailed down his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Jason Gurka got the loss giving up three runs in two innings of work.
