Fire Chief John Robert Ray has officially announced his retirement effective May 1, 2013.

Chief Ray, a 35 year veteran of the Department, was appointed Fire Chief in October of 2008.

During his career, Chief Ray served in every major division of the Department including the Services, Logistics and Operations Bureaus.  He served as the Fire Marshal for Anne Arundel County, directing the Code Enforcement and Fire Investigation sections.  Chief Ray also served as the Director of Inspections and Permits in 2002.  County Executive Laura A. Neuman in a statement said, “I want to thank Chief Ray for his 35 years of service to this community and wish him well in his future endeavors.”

During his years as Fire Chief, his many accomplishments included the construction of the Annapolis Neck and Marley Fire Stations, as well as the implementation of the EMS Billing program which has generated revenues in excess of $20 million.  He led the initiative for Residential Sprinklers in one and two family dwellings in Anne Arundel County.  He also served as the chairman of the Baltimore Metropolitan Fire Chief’s Council.

In announcing his retirement, Chief Ray stated that he looks forward to spending more time with his wife Bridget, and their family which includes a new grandson, Timothy.

A national search has begun for Chief Ray’s replacement.  If a permanent Chief is not selected by May 1, 2013, an Acting Chief will serve until an appointment is made.
