Anne Arundel Special Olympics

Anne Arundel County Special Olympics is a non-profit organization providing sports programs to over 300 eligible athletes, ages eight to adult, with a cognitive delay or developmental disability. The program includes a variety of sports including Bocce, Cycling, Duckpin Bowling, Softball, Swimming, Track & Field; all training takes place locally and is offered to athletes free of charge. ·        6:30 pm, Thurs., May 2, 2013, Volunteer Orientation: Those interested in volunteering with Special Olympics are required to attend an orientation meeting. Arundel House of Hope

Arundel House of Hope’s programs encompass a variety of services for individuals experiencing homelessness in Anne Arundel County. These include transitional housing through the Fouse Center, Permanent and Community Housing, Supportive Housing through the Safe Haven Program, the Resource and Day Center, and the Winter Relief rotating shelter program. General volunteer needs include administrative support, transportation to and from appointments, job counseling and life skills coaches, computer maintenance help, and persons to serve on the board of directors. Additional volunteer opportunities vary by location but include facilities maintenance and repair and grounds maintenance. Donations of food and clothing items, cleaning, office and kitchen supplies, paper products, toiletry items, landscaping tools, and more are also needed. ·        7–9 p., Thurs., May 9, 2013, 2nd Annual Wine Pairing Dinner: This gala 5-course dinner featuring Italy is being held at Our Lady of the Fields, 1070 Cecil Ave., Millersville, MD.  All proceeds will benefit the House of Hope Medical Clinic, the only free standing, free healthcare clinic in Anne Arundel County. HOHMC partners with volunteer healthcare professionals to provide quality healthcare to the uninsured and underinsured population. Youth for Understanding USA

Youth For Understanding (YFU) is a worldwide movement of committed individuals and organizations working together to prepare young people for their responsibilities and challenges in a changing, interdependent global community; it advances intercultural understanding, mutual respect, and social responsibility through educational exchanges for youth, families and communities. Volunteers are being sought to mentor high school age international exchange students; families are also needed to host such students. Evangelical Ministries of Glen Burnie

Evangelical Ministries is a nonprofit nondenominational church that provides, in addition to usual church services and events, mentoring to adult females who have been released from correctional facilities as well as grief counseling. Adult female volunteers are needed to mentor adult females released from correctional institutions. Also needed are individuals with training, knowledge, and experience with grief counseling to facilitate, on a weekly basis, groups of adults and possibly adolescents. Also desired is someone fluent in American Sign Language to assist with worship services or other social groups involving deaf persons. The church is also looking forward to providing future bilingual worship services for Hispanics and would like to enlist services of someone fluent in Spanish. Happy Helpers for the Homeless, Saturdays and Sundays

This nonprofit organization provides food, toiletries, and clothing to the hungry and homeless.  Volunteers, as young as 6, are needed Saturdays (11:30am-2:30pm) and Sundays (1:00-4:00pm) to assist in distributing items and bag lunches in downtown Baltimore and Glen Burnie.  Ongoing donations needed: men’s socks, toiletry items, men’s clothing, blankets, shoes in very good condition, sturdy napkins/paper towels, mustard, juice boxes, fold-over sandwich bags, lunch meat and fresh fruit. Ongoing through winter is the, coat, blanket, and gloves drive. Volunteers can meet in Glen Burnie to caravan up to Baltimore. ·        Bag a Breakfast Project. Put together a bag breakfast for a homeless individual. Include box of cereal, with spoon and cup, poptart, fruit, hot chocolate package with cup and spoon, juice box, and napkin.  Can be done anytime. Just drop off at Happy Helpers.

·        6:30 p.m., Sat., Jun. 1, 2013, National Stand for Children Day: Volunteers are needed to help with this annual party hosted at Sarah’s House Shelter, Ft. Meade, MD, which includes arts and crafts, games, face-painting, refreshments, and a donation of much needed items to the shelter. Seeds 4 Success

The mission of Seeds 4 Success, Inc. (S4S) is to provide children and families living in Annapolis public and subsidized housing communities with knowledge, services, relationships and experiences that help children grow into successful, healthy, and contributing adults. One of S4S’ main programs is Eastport Girls Club (EGC) which serves 5th–9th grade girls with a variety of programs. However, most of families of girls do not have personal vehicles. Thus, transportation to classes, camps, and events is an important gap Seeds 4 Success tries to address, and volunteers, age 18 and up, are being sought to fill this need. Background and driving record checks are required.  Contact the S4S Education Director, Valerie Drozd, at 410-919-3347 ([email protected]), and she will provide you with a written application. Once you have submitted a complete application, Mrs. Drozd will schedule an in-person interview.

 

Severna Park Community Center (SPCC)

Volunteer opportunities include helping on committees, help with benefit events (Gala, Golf Tournament, etc.), help support small projects held at the Center, help in writing grants to improve the Center, and much more. ·        7:30 am, Sat., May 18, 2012, “Shape up Severna Park” Fundraising Walk: Walk, run, stroll or bike along the Baltimore-Annapolis trail beginning at SPCC.  Open to all ages and your four legged friend on a leash is also welcome. Proceeds benefit the Severna Park Community Center.
