Baysox Blast Past Aeros

BaysoxFor the second night in a row, the Baysox (6-5) used a big four run inning to come back from a five run deficit and beat the Akron Aeros (3-6) 9-5 Sunday afternoon to win the series. The Baysox have scored seven or more runs the past three nights.

Designated hitter Caleb Joseph homered for the second game in a row and drove in a total of three runs in the game to increase his team leading RBI total to 13.

“I have been feeling a lot of the things at the plate that I have been working on; I have been able to see the result,” Joseph said. “Earlier on I was really working on the process. I have been working on a few mechanical things and getting the process down so the result ends up being there.”

Akron benefitted from a pair of Baysox errors to take an early lead against Baysox starter Mike Wright in the top of the second inning. Jesus Aguilar reached on a fielding error by third baseman Buck Britton to start the inning and moved to second base when Quincy Latimore singled to left field. Both runners scored on a single from Carlos Moncrief and fielding error by center fielder Xavier Avery. Giovanny Urshela reached on an infield single that moved Moncrief to third base where he scored on a groundout by Ronny Rodriguez to give the Aeros a 3-0 lead.

The Aeros extended their lead the following inning. Chun Chen hit a lead off home run to left field and with two outs, Moncrief reached on an infield single. Urshela singled to move Moncrief to second base where he scored when Rodriguez singled to center field to make the score 5-0.

Bowie got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the third inning against Akron starter Toru Murata. Catcher Luis Martinez hit a lead off double to right field and right fielder John Ruettiger followed with a walk. Avery singled to right field to plate Martinez and move Ruettiger to third base where he scored on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Ty Kelly to make the score 5-2.

The Baysox cut into the lead again in the bottom of the fourth when Joseph hit a solo home run into left field to make the score 5-3.

Bowie came back to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out rally. Ruettiger hit a one out single to left field and Avery followed with a walk. With two outs, Kelly reached on a fielding error to load the bases and Joseph came through with a two-RBI single to right field before Cole Cook replaced Murata on the mound. Cook immediately surrendered a double to Britton that scored two more runs and gave the Baysox a 7-5 lead.

The Baysox struck again in the bottom of the eighth inning against Akron reliever Brett Brach. Martinez hit a one out double to left field and scored on a Ruettiger double to left field. With two outs, left fielder Kyle Hudson singled to left field to plate Ruettiger and make the score 9-5.

Wright pitched four and two-thirds innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out five and walking one in the no decision. Reliever Clay Schrader pitched two and one-third scoreless innings in relief, allowing three hits while striking out two and walking one in the win. Reliever Tom Boleska pitched a scoreless eighth inning, walking two batters and striking out one. Righty Sean Gleason pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and walking one batter.

Murata pitched four and two-thirds innings and allowed seven runs (three earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out two in the loss.

LHP Jake Pettit (1-0, 5.73) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team begins a three game home series against the Erie SeaWolves beginning at 7:05 p.m.

The Baysox are home through Wednesday, April 17 for a seven game homestand to start the season. Mutt Monday is Monday, April 15 at 7:05 p.m., Tailgate Tuesday is April 16 beginning at 7:05 p.m and the Baysox complete the homestand with an 11:05 a.m. game Wednesday.
