On The Road & In The Round features highly acclaimed, veteran singer/songwriters Thom Schuyler, Craig Bickhardt and JD Malone with very special guest Maryland Songwriters Emmy White, Mike White and Ellis Woodward. Craig Bickhardt is the uniting force behind this fabulous writers-in-the-round series, and this one at the Chesapeake Arts Center promises to be the best yet with Craig’s old friend, collaborator and Songwriters Hall Of Fame inductee, Thom Schuyler, plus the sensational JD Malone. Nashville, the hit ABC television series, frequently features Writers-In-The-Round scenes from The Bluebird Cafe. Craig Bickhardt and Thom Schuyler were two of the original Bluebird Cafe Writers In The Round artist!

Thom Schuyler- Thom’s performing style reflects his early folk influences including Dylan, John Prine and Loudon Wainwright.  His literary lyrical sense and storytelling skills shine in songs like “My Old Yellow Car” and “Sixteenth Avenue,” the unofficial anthem of Music Row’s songwriting community.  Thom has been a solo recording artist for Capitol Records and a member of the MTM Records trios S-K-O (Schuyler, Knobloch & Overstreet) and SKB (Schuyler, Knobloch & Bickhardt).  Thom and Craig Bickhardt co-wrote the classic song, “This Old House.” His song “Love Will Turn You Around” (Kenny Rogers) was ASCAP Song of the Year in 1982, and American Music Awards Song of the year in 1983.  Other chart-toppers include: “I Fell In Love Again Last Night” (The Forester Sisters), “Years After You” (John Conlee), “Long Line Of Love” (Michael Martin Murphey), “Love Out Loud” (Earl Thomas Conley) “Are the Roses Not Blooming?” (The Judds) and “Child Support” (Barbara Mandrell.) His song “Point of Light” was the theme song of the Presidential volunteerism campaign. Thom has also served as an A&R executive at RCA, and as an industry leader on the boards of both NARAS and CMA.  He hails from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and currently lives in Nashville. “For a session with really sharp teeth and legs, seek out Thom Schuyler, ‘Prayer of a Desperate Man.” (www.thomschuyler.com, A). He’s a legend at Nashville’s singer/songwriter haunt, the Bluebird Cafe. And Schuyler’s every turn of the page feels honest, thoughtful and often amusing.”-Jonathan Takiff, Philadelphia Daily News

Craig Bickhardt – A folk/Americana performing songwriter with major writing credits, a poet’s voice, a virtuoso guitar style and a veteran’s experience. The native Pennsylvanian’s first big break came in 1982, when he wrote and sang two songs for Robert Duvall’s Academy Award-winning film Tender Mercies, a movie with a similar theme to this year’s award winning Crazy Heart. In the wake of that film’s success, Bickhardt made his move to Nashville where his songs found their way onto platinum and Grammy-winning recordings by legends such as Johnny Cash, Martina McBride, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Pam Tillis, Kathy Mattea and Alison Krauss. His 800-tune catalog includes nine Top Ten hits (four No. 1 country hits — “Turn It Loose” and “I Know Where I’m Going” recorded by The Judds, “In Between Dances” by Pam Tillis and “It Must Be Love” recorded by Ty Herndon). His friends and collaborators have included Thom Schuyler, Fred Knobloch and Don Schlitz, the original Writers in the Round at Nashville’s fabled Bluebird Café. He joined with Schuyler and Knobloch as the band SKB to record No Easy Horses for MTM Records. Three hits came from that collaboration, including Bickhardt’s chart-topper, “Givers And Takers.” In 2006, Bickhardt left a changed Nashville to return to the concert stage and to his roots in eastern Pennsylvania. He wowed audiences on the main stage at the 2008 Philadelphia Folk Festival where festival programmers called his performance “absolutely outstanding.” His most recent CD, Brother To The Wind, features guest performances by Janis Ian, Tim O’Brien, Darrell Scott, Terri Hendrix, Lloyd Maines, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Maura O’Connell, POCO, Andy Leftwich, Tommy Geddes and Craig’s daughter, Aislin Bickhardt.Website: www.craigbickhardt.com

“After all his years in the big time, [Craig] has managed to retain that purity of spirit, and Brother keeps it refreshingly real.”-Nick Cristiano, The Philadelphia Inquirer

JD Malone – dad, husband, son, brother, friend, singer/songwriter and recovering philosopher. Born and raised under a bright blue sky in the Green Mountain State of Vermont. JD Malone writes and sings songs about love and hate, angels and demons, and the universal struggle to feel safe under the stars. J.D. has shared the stage with many national acts: Third Eye Blind, Eve 6, Sugar Ray, Vertical Horizon, Fuel, Familiar 48, Living Colour, The Fixx, July for Kings, Lola Ray, Robert Hazard, Silvertide, John Faye Power Trip, The Martians, The Bogmen, Dee Snyder, John Eddie, Danelia Cotton, Craig Bickhardt, Jim Photoglo, Idlewheel, Eric Andersen, Tom Gillam, Phil Vasser, Terri Clark, Steve Forbert and John Gorka. He is winning the hearts and minds of music lovers throughout the area and fits perfectly with Craig Bickhardt and Thom Schuyler for an evening of songs and stories that will be remembered for a very, very long time. With the snarl and grit of early Steve Earle, J.D Malone comes roaring out of the gate with his first collection of tracks, every one a keeper.”-Dean Sciarra  Itsaboutmusic.com
