Pre-St. Patrick’s Day Concert In Galesville

Jennifer CuttingJennifer Cutting’s Award-winning OCEAN Quartet brings a wealth of traditional Irish songs and tunes along with her Celtic-inflected originals to the Galesville Memorial Hall on Saturday, March 16 for a pre-St. Patrick’s Day concert.

Known for her stunning arrangements of classic material as well as her delightful original compositions, Jennifer Cutting’s musical presentations are as captivating as they are entertaining. Listen for a cross between the traditional world of squeezebox and pennywhistle and the knee-knocking rhythms of rock and roll. Alternately ethereal and rollicking with its buoyant beats and soaring Celtic melodies, the OCEAN Quartet provides an uplifting soundtrack for traveling hopefully on life’s changing seas.

The Quartet consists of Lisa Moscatiello, whose superb vocals, lilting whistle and stellar guitar playing offer a decidedly masterful interpretation of Cutting’s material; Andrew Dodds who can make an Irish fiddle dance; Steve Winick, whose rustic and rootsy vocals add an earthy undertone to the show; and Cutting herself on keyboard and accordion. Together they present a rousing blend of traditional tunes intermixed with melodies reconstructed from ancient manuscripts or blooming from Cutting’s imagination.

Deeply connected to the natural world, Cutting dips heavily in the springs of Ireland’s Celtic past. “Celtic music for Ancient Moderns,” is how Cutting herself describes her work. You won’t hear songs like “Danny Boy”, a relative newcomer to the world of Irish music, penned by an Englishman in 1910. Instead, her songs are rife with images of the iconic Green Man and threaded with the magic of Oak, Ash and Thorn. Her audience at one moment can lose itself in a dreamy reverie and cut loose the next when the mood changes to propulsive jigs and reels. More indicative of Cutting’s talent as a composer is the audience’s ability (and willingness) to recall (and sing) her songs long after the show is over.

“There are so many astounding elements in this music,” writes New Age reporter R. J. Lannan, “that it is hard to describe them all. Cutting’s blend of traditional Irish adaptations, soaring musical compositions that include new age, Celtic and classical styles and her exceptional use of subject matter, i.e. the ocean in myth and reality make her one of the most creative composers I have ever heard.”

Tickets for the St. Patrick’s Day Concert are $15 cash advance or $20 at the door. Beer and wine will be for sale; proceeds will benefit the West River Improvement Association.  The Galesville Memorial Hall is located at 952 Galesville Road, Galesville, Md. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. Music starts at 8 p.m. For reservations call 443-786-0463 or e-mail [email protected].
