UPDATE 2:18pm March 21, 2013: In a letter sent home with students this afternoon, Glen Burnie High School Principal, Vicki Plitt identified the specific rest room as the one in the “Media Building.”
On March 20, 2013, at approximately 10:20 a.m., a male student at Glen Burnie High School located in the 7500 block of Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard in Glen Burnie discovered a device believed to be a camera located in the men’s restroom inside of the high school. The student reported the discovery to school administrators around noon and reported feeling uncomfortable using the restroom as a result.
School officials and other employees familiar with the school assisted law enforcement by immediately scanning all of the restrooms along with locker rooms in the school yesterday and again this morning to determine if any other unauthorized cameras had been placed in any of the school’s buildings. At this time, no other cameras have been located. The recovered device was turned over to detectives from the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division, who immediately began an investigation.
Preliminary investigation confirms that the device was a visible camera located in a top corner of the men’s restroom. Initial information has revealed that a 14-year veteran of the department currently assigned to the Special Services Bureau installed the camera on his own volition, without knowledge of the police department or school system. At this time, no images or recordings have been discovered on the camera; however, the investigation is active and ongoing. The officer has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The officer’s police powers have been suspended.
“The Police Department takes this matter seriously,” said Chief of Police Larry W. Tolliver. “I immediately ordered a thorough investigation of this incident to include consultation with the State’s Attorney’s Office to ensure all legal aspects of the case were covered.”
