Can you and four other teammates pull a delivery truck with a rope and your bare hands? Come participate or cheer on your friends at the 2nd Annual Anne Arundel Community College Truck Pull Thursday, April 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway, Parking Lot C.
Sponsored by AACC’s Department of Business Management and Entrepreneurial Studies and the Transportation, Logistics and Supply Chain Management program, the event is planned as a fun way to highlight the college’s offerings and the need for workers in these growing fields.
“I don’t think students realize the variety of occupations in this field,” said Kipp C. Snow, instructional specialist. “They may think transportation means truck drivers or warehouse workers, and yes, there are those jobs, but there also are the logistics, the product staging, the order fulfillment, the documentation for freight and import/export. There are jobs requiring technology and analysis. People are always going to need goods delivered. You are always going to have transportation. Those jobs are always going to be there.”
One way to showcase the various occupations in the field is this year’s new “Passport” game. Several area businesses in the transportation industry will have booths near the truck pull that will contain industry information, career opportunities and job openings. Students receive a “passport stamp” for each booth they visit, with prizes for those who fill up their “passport.”
The truck pull is the main attraction. Teams of five people will compete in a timed competition by pulling an empty delivery box truck with a rope over a short, marked course in Parking Lot C. People can enter teams in the student, student club, faculty/staff or community categories, with prizes for the top finishers. Participation is free.
AACC has changed the way it delivers its certificate program so that it is offered online in eight-week sessions. Students can earn a certificate within a year and a second certificate by continuing their education for an extra semester, which makes it convenient for full-time workers or single parents.
