On Screen/In Person Independent Film Series Continues With “Abel Raises Cain”

Abel Raises CainMaryland Hall presents a screening of the film, “Abel Raises Cain” and a discussion with the director, Jenny Abel on Tuesday, March 12 at 7 pm. This screening is part of the On Screen/In Person Independent Film Series taking place this fall and winter at Maryland Hall. Tickets for the screening and discussion are $10; $7 for Maryland Hall members.

In “Abel Raises Cain,” the filmmaker provides an unprecedented glimpse into the life and extraordinary career of her father, Alan Abel, the notorious media prankster who has made a name for himself several times over with a series of elaborate hoaxes and schemes, all of which were designed to provoke, amuse and make people question everything that they see, hear or read.

Jenny Abel initially began a career in music, having studied the viola since the age of eight and receiving a scholarship to attend music school. She decided to take a completely different path in life and transferred to Emerson College in Boston, graduating with a degree in video and television production. Abel moved to Los Angeles shortly thereafter and began coordinating overseas films for Nu Image and Millennium Films. Over the course of four years, she helped the company produce 26 pictures. In 2003, she left her job so that she could focus on finishing her own project, “Abel Raises Cain,” her first feature documentary.

The On Screen/In Person Independent Film Series is sponsored by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. The series showcases new independent American films and their respective filmmakers to communities across the mid-Atlantic region.

Maryland Hall is supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of Maryland and the National Endowment for the Arts, and a grant from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County.
