Ballet Theatre of Maryland (BTM), the state’s premier professional ballet company, will be performing Coppélia at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts for three performances:

  • Friday, February 22 at 7:00pm
  • Saturday, February 23 at 7:00pm
  • Sunday, February 24 at 2:00pm

Coppélia is a sentimental comedic ballet based off an E.T.A. Hoffman story (the author of  The Nutcracker). Originally choreographed in 1870 by Arthur Saint-Leon to the music of Leo Delibes, the ballet has been interpreted and adapted many times over the years, most famously by Enrico Cecchetti, Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa. Dianna Cuatto, artistic director for the Ballet Theatre of Maryland, stays true to the humor of Saint-Leon’s original choreography, while infusing the story with the spirited choreography and beautiful staging audiences have come to expect from Ballet Theatre of Maryland.

Coppélia is set in a small village and centers around a pair of lovers – Swanhilda (played by Meagan Helman/Nicole Kelsch) and her fiancé Franz (Brian Walker/Alexander Collen) – the town’s eccentric toymaker, Doctor Coppelius (Calder Taylor), and his beautiful daughter, Coppélia (Brittany Yourstone/Kaitlin Frankenfield).

Coppélia is the quintessential comedic ballet and provides the leading ballerina with a dazzling tour de force challenge that is incomparable,” Says Artistic Director Dianna Cuatto, “I think the audience will find the mix of styles, the humor, the music and the story to be a delightful post-Valentine treat.”

Adult tickets start at $34.50, with discounts for seniors, students, and children.  Tickets are available through Maryland Hall’s box office: www.mdhallarts.org or 410.280.5640.   More information is at: www.balletmaryland.org.
