LivingGreenLogo150BoatUS has selected Annapolis Green as a finalist in its Grassroots Grant competition. The organization that receives the highest number of online votes by March 6 wins $10,000.

Annapolis Green applied for the Grassroots Grant to grow its existing event Greening program, “Red Right Recycle,” at the Annapolis Boat Shows to showcase the importance of Green boating & clean waterside operations as a replicable model for any waterside event.

As America’s Sailing Capital on the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis hosts the annual Annapolis Sailboat and Powerboat Shows, the largest and oldest in-water boat shows in the country. Annapolis Green sees an opportunity to reach the 90,000 recreational boaters drawn to these events, some 700 exhibitors, and many residents, and businesses with a Green Boating message: Protect Our Bay.

We modified the familiar boating mnemonic “Red, Right, Return” to fit our campaign. Our goal is for “Red, Right Recycle” to become synonymous with clean boating and good stewardship of the waterways.

One of Annapolis Green’s goals in the use of the grant funds is to deploy tools, including its colorful eco-stations, to divert 80% of boat show waste from the landfill, including paper, plastic, cardboard, carpeting & metal. If Annapolis Green wins the competition it will implement a public relations campaign to create grassroots support for Green practices on the part of recreational boaters, exhibitors and show management. This will include a training program for volunteers, boat show and waste collection staff about “Red Right Recycle” making them good stewards of local waterways. This will be complemented by a “Red Right Recycle” web-based, mobile-ready Green & clean boating site for local and visiting recreational boaters, exhibitors and show attendees.

Annapolis Green is the only organization in the mid-Atlantic region in the competition.

The public can support Annapolis Green by voting once a day, every day, until March 6 on the BoatUS Facebook page or on its website: www.boatus.com/foundation/grants/vote.asp.
