Woman Dies In Glen Burnie Fire

UPDATE:  The individual has been identified by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner as 50 year old, Shari Lee DeStefano.

At 10:22 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2013, Anne Arundel County Firefighters were dispatched to a reported dwelling fire at 21 Sumac Road in the Marley area of Anne Arundel County. The first unit to arrive on the scene reported visible smoke coming from a one-story multiple family home. An aggressive fire suppression and search/rescue operation was then initiated by the first arriving crews. Within four minutes of arrival, personnel located and rescued a 40 50 year old female from the basement of the residence. The victim was treated at the scene by Paramedics and transported to BWMC where she succumbed to her injuries at 12:14 a.m. In all, it took approximately 46 Firefighters 34 minutes to bring the “All Hands” incident under control.

The fire was reported by neighbors who were alerted to the incident when they observed smoke coming from the home. The fire which originated in the lower level of the dwelling caused an estimated $10,000 in damages. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation but is believed to have been accidental.

At this time, the name of the victim and the immediate cause of death are being withheld pending positive identification and the result of an autopsy by the State Medical Examiner. A preliminary investigation into the incident revealed that there were no working smoke detectors in the dwelling. 9 adults and 2 children were given assistance and shelter by the Red Cross. This is the second fatal fire in Anne Arundel County in this year.
