Annapolis Light House Shelter

This emergency shelter facility provides shelter for single men and women and families and runs a transitional housing program in Annapolis. Volunteers, 18 and over, are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children’s programs, facilities cleaning & maintenance, office and administration, and adult education programs. There is a current need for lunchtime kitchen volunteers from 10:45 am–Noon on Tues.,Wed., and Fridays. Also, volunteers are needed from 3:00–5:30 pm on Mon.–Sat. to distribute food and other items Winter Relief clients. Donations of bagged lunches are being sought; also needed are bottled water and small bags of snacks for the Winter Relief Program. Anne Arundel County Animal Control Commission

The Animal Control Commission is seeking a licensed or retired veterinarian to serve on the seven member Commission consisting a representative of the Health Department, the Police Department, a veterinarian and four appointed citizens. The Commission is an independent body not a part of Animal Control, and citizen members are appointed by the County Executive for a term of two years. The Animal Control Commander is the Executive Secretary of the Commission and his/her designee maintains records of all Commission hearings.

All hearings before the Commission are open to the public, and it may be helpful for the candidate to attend a hearing to become familiar with the workings of the Commission. The Arc of the Central Chesapeake Region

The Arc advocates for and supports County citizens with developmental disabilities. Volunteers are needed to help with fund raising, assist in the office, and with special events. Volunteers are also needed for painting at the homes and yard work for all of the spring and summer at the Spa Road office and residences. Jennifer Road Detention Center

There is an immediate need for one or two volunteers to facilitate a Book Club for an hour once a month for inmates at the Center. Also, volunteers, 21+ years of age, who pass a background check are needed to work in the library, assist with Pre-GED classes and the education program, as tutors, and to facilitate self-help workshops on parenting, job readiness, financial issues, and more. Training is provided. The education/Pre-GED program is held on Wed. & Thurs evenings. Self-help workshop scheduling is flexible.  Contact Karen McDonald at 410-222-7093.

Auxiliary of the Anne Arundel Medical Center

The Auxiliary of Anne Arundel Medical Center, 2001 Medical Parkway, Annapolis, needs volunteers ages 18 and older, daytime and evening hours, weekdays and weekends.   Positions include opportunities in patient interaction, customer service, and retail assistance.  The auxiliary has been serving the hospital since 1944.  Volunteers are an integral part of AAMC’s mission of providing patient-centered, high quality health care services.  Prospective volunteers are required to pre-register and attend a one-hour orientation.  For information and to register call the auxiliary office, 443-481-5050.

 

Greyhound Welfare, Inc.

The mission of this all volunteer nonprofit is to place ex-racing greyhounds into adoptive homes and to educate the public on greyhound and animal welfare. Volunteers, 21 and older, help with public outreach, the newsletter, screening adoption applications, adoption-follow-up, dog-transport to special events, planning and implementing fundraising events and donation drives, order supplies, write routine correspondence, pick up donations, coordinate veterinary care, foster a greyhound during the transition period before an adoptive home is found, and much more. Heartland Hospice Services

Heartland Hospice provides hospice care to patients with limited life expectancy as well as support to their caregivers. Volunteers, age 18 and up with a drivers license, are needed as Friendly Visitors to visit patients in their home or nursing home, as Vigil Volunteers to sit with patients without immediate family who are nearing death, as Bereavement Volunteers to call on families of those recently deceased. Clerical and Special Project Volunteers are also needed to help with mailings, office projects, and to create special gifts for patients. Save the Coconuts

Originally formed as a walking team to raise funding through participation in the Susan G. Komen and Avon Walks for Breast Cancer in Washington, DC, “Save The Coconuts” is now a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds to fight breast cancer in the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County areas. Secure the Call

This local coalition of over 120 organizations collects used and unwanted cell phones and redistributes them as 911 emergency only phones. Volunteers, age 18 and up, are needed to form groups and go into mapped parts of Anne Arundel County to place Secure the Call phone collection barrels in any place it may be allowed. Severn River Lions Foundation

The Foundation provides vision and hearing screenings for almost all ages in ongoing programs. Our members, who are all volunteers, provide these screenings and also help other organizations such as Partners in Care, Meals on Wheels and Rebuilding Together (e.g. manpower for building handicap ramps) and individuals with our Medical Equipment Loan Closet.
