Leopold Opts For Judge, Not Jury Trial. Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold has decided to opt for a trial by judge, forgoing the jury process. The announcement was made late Thursday morning in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court, a day after dozens of people were called to the courthouse and a pool of about 40 possible jurors were chosen.

Maryland Food Band Urgently Needs Volunteers. The Maryland Food Bank has 300,000 pounds of food waiting to go to the needy, but few people to sort it. The food bank announced Thursday an urgent need for volunteers to help sort and pack food for distribution. The most pressing need is from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. weekdays. Volunteers over the age 18 are needed to sort food on a high-speed conveyor belt. If enough people can help, the food bank will open on the holiday Monday.

Former Naval Academy Professor Charged With Sexual Assault. A former teacher at the U.S. Naval Academy is facing allegations that he sexually assaulted a student in 2011. An academy spokesman said testimony ended Tuesday in a military court hearing. The academy identified the teacher as Marine Maj. Mark Thompson, who arrived at the school in 2010.

Compromise Bill Crafted To Address Pit Bull Ruling. Some legislators and animal activists are howling happy about a new bill that addresses a court ruling last year that labels pit bulls “an inherently dangerous breed.” The legislation addresses the issue of who is liable when a dog bites somebody — and it applies to all dog breeds, not just pit bulls. “We think the compromise is fair to victims, to owners and the landlords,” said Montgomery County Sen. Brian Frosh, D-District 16, who chairs the Judicial Proceedings Committee.
