Fiscal Crisis Averted, More Fights Loom.  After exhaustive negotiations that strained the country’s patience, the House approved a Senate bill to thwart a dreaded fiscal cliff. The 257-167 vote largely fell along partisan lines: 172 Democrats voted yes and 16 Democrats voted no; 85 Republicans voted yes and 151 Republicans voted no.

ID Theft Law Among New Laws To Take Effect Today. A Maryland law enabling parents to better protect their children from identity theft is among several taking effect in 2013. Same-sex marriage also will be allowed in Maryland next week, and another new law taking effect on Tuesday will allow veterans to show that status on their driver’s licenses.

Teen Driver Hits Oncoming Car, Dies. A teenager who lost control of his vehicle overnight and hit an oncoming car has died. Harford County Sheriff’s Office investigators said Austin D. Remines, 17, of Belcamp, was traveling in the 300 block of Bush Chapel Road in Aberdeen shortly after 11:20 p.m. at the time of the crash. Witnesses told authorities that Remines had rounded a curve, crossed the center line, swerved back into his lane and lost control, ultimately hitting an oncoming car.

Carl Snowden To Retire Over Legal Problems. The head of the Maryland attorney general’s civil rights office has announced he is retiring, a decision that comes in the aftermath of legal problems. Carl Snowden released a statement by email Friday saying that he plans to retire effective Jan. 8. Snowden, a longtime Maryland civil rights leader, has a Jan. 7 court date on charges of violating his probation in a 2010 drunken driving case. Snowden also was convicted last month by a Baltimore jury of misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He received a suspended 60-day sentence and a year of probation
