Tickets are now on sale for the 32nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast at Anne Arundel Community College on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013.

This year’s breakfast will feature keynote speaker Pastor Jimmy Rollins, lead pastor of the i5 Church in Odenton, and will continue to focus on making youth more aware of the debt owed to the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Eugene Peterson, chair of the Breakfast Committee, said that young people need to get reconnected to the vision of Dr. King.

“The youth of today need to know that even with the re-election of President Barack Obama, the first African American to occupy the Oval Office, the struggle for justice and equality continues. A lot of us fought for the King Holiday as a Day On – Not A Day Off – a day where we recommit to service to others, a key part of Dr. King’s vision for our nation. Hopefully, the breakfast will remind our youth that we all must strive to overcome, not some day, but today.”

Doors for the event open at 7:30 a.m. with breakfast served at 8 a.m. in the David S. Jenkins Gymnasium on the AACC Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway. The breakfast honors local residents and civic leaders who best emulate the spirit of Dr. King and salutes winners of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Visionary Kids Contest, a showcase for the performing and visual arts talents of Anne Arundel County Public School students.

Pastor Rollins, a lifelong resident of the western portion of Anne Arundel County, challenges people to use their gifts, talents and abilities to make a positive impact in the community and beyond. His congregation works with a children’s center in Nairobi, Kenya, to provide essentials to 18 orphans. Closer to home, Rollins co-founded the i5 Elite, an independent youth track club, which – in addition to offering coaching in track techniques – provides mentoring, accountability and tutoring to more than 150 young people on a weekly basis.

Serving as Master and Mistress of Ceremony are Nicholas Lefavor, the student member of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Board of Education, and Monique Howard, a county public schools graduate who has a 3.5 grade-point average at Clarke Atlanta University where she is studying journalism.

Tickets cost $35 each or $350 for a table for 10. They are limited and sold on a first-come basis. People should RSVP by Jan. 11, 2013. Event proceeds will go to defray the cost of putting on the breakfast and providing the funds to honor the student Visionary Kids Contest winners. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to local soup kitchens and shelters.

For tickets or information, contact Eugene Peterson at 301-538-0887, Dianne Williams at 410-222-5354 or Darlene Robinson at 410-481-1961.
