Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management

The AA County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) coordinates resources and facilitates the response and recovery efforts of local, state, federal and private agencies in emergencies.  OEM has a variety of volunteer opportunities available. There is a particular need at this time for volunteer drivers (with 4-wheel drive vehicles), age 21 and up, and with a good driving record, to transport caregivers to the facility in inclement weather conditions in the winter months. Anne Arundel County Public Library

Library Branches have differing needs for both on-going projects and short-term volunteer activities. Some examples include cleaning and re-casing books, CD and DVD collections, assembly of Story-Time projects, copying, data processing or other computer projects, and file maintenance; ongoing tasks for daily morning shifts include helping with  unloading and processing delivery and looking on the shelves for requested items. Volunteer shifts are often flexible and may include some evenings or weekends in addition to day-time hours. Some Branches can work with volunteers as young as 14 and may keep applications on file to call prospective volunteers when needs arise. Training is provided. See www.aacpl.net. Anne Arundel Mentoring Roundtable

The Anne Arundel Mentoring Roundtable is a forum which meets on a quarterly basis to share ideas, best practices and create momentum for mentoring programs that foster the positive development of the County’s young people through wise, trustworthy, and caring adults. It is a program of the Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County that is being revitalized and seeks your involvement. Through their participation, a number of school-based, faith-based, business-based, and community-based mentoring programs support the mission and goals of the roundtable. Those interested in mentoring, should contact the Volunteer Center for more information at [email protected] or(410) 897-9207 or. Box of Rain Foundation

This nonprofit was formed to honor the memory of Lee Griffin & his passion for sailing to teach life building skills through maritime experiences for local youth-at-risk, targeting kids 9-14 years old. Volunteer are needed as mentors for the big sailor/little sailor program and as sailing instructors. Donations of funds and safety boats for sailing classes, boats, boating equipment – especially life preservers and gear are also being sought. Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County

Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County (BGCAA) is a non-profit organization consisting of six clubs (Annapolis Gardens, Bates, Bywater, and Admiral Oaks in Annapolis, Freetown in Pasadena, and Meade Village in Severn) where youth come to receive tutoring, computer education, sports training, homework help, and mentoring. BGCAA strives to improve each Club member’s life by instilling self-esteem, courage, and positive values.  BGCAA was founded in 1988 with their first Club in Bywater – they now serve over 2,400 youth from age 5 to 18 all across the county. Volunteers are needed as tutors, mentors, assistants in computer labs, arts & crafts, sports coaching, as administrative help in the office, and more. Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company

The mission of the Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company is: To Serve and Protect the Citizens of Anne Arundel County from fire and medical emergencies through quick response to calls requiring aid. The company is always accepting applications for membership. There are opportunities to serve in a variety of roles including emergency medical and ambulance technicians, firefighter, hazmat operations, and more. Maryland Therapeutic Riding

Located in Crownsville, Maryland Therapeutic Riding (MTR) is a Premier Accredited Therapeutic Riding Center that offers therapeutic horseback riding lessons for children and adults with special needs. Volunteers, ages 14 and up, assist with riding lessons and are needed throughout the week to assist with horse care, barn and facility maintenance. Quilts for Kids, Annapolis Chapter

The national organization’s mission is to keep expensive fabric out of our landfills and bring happiness to children through the simple gift of a handmade quilt. Volunteers, age 15 and up, are needed for an ongoing project to serve children in hospitals in Annapolis and surrounding communities. Basic sewing skills are necessary but instruction will be provided for quilting. Volunteers must have a sewing machine and transportation.
