Annapolis Film Festival

The Annapolis Film Festival, to be held in historic downtown Annapolis, Maryland, March 21-24, 2013, is accepting entries at www.annapolisfilmfestival.net via the link to “Withoutabox.” The deadline for submissions is December 15th, 2012. This is an opportunity to have your film showcased at an exciting, new festival which will be well attended by audiences from the entire region.  Entries are being accepted in a number of categories and films will be shown at a variety of locations in downtown Annapolis. Selections will be made by a committee of film professionals with the final slate of 50-70 films announced after January 4th, 2013.  The Festival will also feature internationally acclaimed film-makers, guest speakers, and panel discussions. Center of Help (Centro de Ayuda)

The Center of Help is a non-profit which provides a variety of social services to the Latino community in the City of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County with support offices in Annapolis and Glen Burnie. Volunteers are needed for a variety of functions in the office and as ESOL and academic achievement educators, writers to prepare articles/releases for the press and prepare grants, and to assist with media/marketing/public relations, including political liaison; event and parent-school involvement coordinators as well as social services advocates are also needed. The Center is announcing the following schedule of six ESOL classes per week, currently attended by over 60: In the past three years we have grown the offering of classes from three to six and this includes our first night class on Thursdays from 7:00 –9:00 p.m.Other days/times are– Mondays 10am –Noon; Tuesdays 11:00 am– 1:00 pm. and 3:30 pm– 5:00 pm; and,Thursdays 10:00 am– Noon and 3:30–5:00 pm.

 

Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (formerly the Horseheads Wetlands Center)

The Center, located in Grasonville, needs volunteers to work in all facets of running this educational and research facility. Volunteer time and duties are flexible and meet the individual volunteer’s interests whether duties involve clerical, grounds maintenance, teaching through animal care or other matters.   • ·         9:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m. on Fridays for nine weeks between Feb. 15 and Apr. 12, 2013, Legacy Institute for the Environment: Participants will learn about the Chesapeake Bay and volunteer on the Center’s Grasonville campus. Good Neighbors Group

Good Neighbors Group is a Severna Park charitable organization that facilitates donations of people’s unwanted items to people and organizations in need, enhances community partnerships and reduces waste. Our all-encompassing message is that no one can do everything, but everyone can do something.  Our group needs a experienced volunteer website programmer or designer to enhance our website to communicate more effectively and cohesively.  This would likely take more time up front than on an ongoing basis. Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company

The mission of the Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company is: To Serve and Protect the Citizens of Anne Arundel County from fire and medical emergencies through quick response to calls requiring aid. The company is always accepting applications for membership. There are opportunities to serve in a variety of roles including emergency medical and ambulance technicians, firefighter, hazmat operations, and more. Light House Shelter Winter Relief Program, Dec. 10, 2012–Mar. 16, 2013

3:30pm–6pm, Mon.-Sat., Dec. 10, 2012–Mar. 16, 2013, Winter Relief Volunteers Needed: The Light House, in partnership with Arundel House of Hope and area churches, will support Winter Relief for the homeless in the city of Annapolis during this winter.  The program will meet the basic needs for food and shelter in a safe, warm and compassionate environment.  Intake will occur at the Light House on Monday through Saturday of each week, at which time the scheduled church will pick them up for the evening. During the time that they are at the Light House, they can take warm showers, wash their clothes and have snacks and beverages. Donations of basic toiletries, snacks, some clothing items, and more, are also being sought. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

NAMI Maryland depends upon volunteers to keep its organization going strong. There are so many ways you can give your time to help NAMI Maryland. You can help with advocacy, fundraising, training, education, community outreach or administrative assistance in the office. North Arundel Health and Rehabilitation Center

Volunteers are needed to assist Center residents in various ways including helping bring them to and from activities (and helping with some of those activities), reading to residents, playing cards/games (especially bingo), visiting rooms, passing meal trays at meal time, etc. Our program allows flexibility, so we can work around a volunteer’s schedule. Most of our activities occur from 9:30am to 5pm, with a lunch break in between. We occasionally have evening activities too until 8pm (usually Tues/Thurs). Ordnance Road Correctional Center

Volunteers, 21 years old + who pass a background check, are needed as adult literacy tutors, to assist with the sewing program,  to teach CPR and to lead substance abuse meetings.  On a quarterly basis, volunteers are needed for the “Read to Me” project, helping to audio-tape the reading of storybooks to inmate’s children; there is some flexibility with weekday, weekend and evening positions available. There is an immediate need for a volunteer Legal Library Assistant for one-two hours per week for inmates at a minimum-medium security county jail setting- hours may be flexible.  Volunteers are needed on Wednesdays for assistance in the library helping to shelve books, check out books and assist staff member with the general library duties. Providence Center

Providence Center is a nonprofit that provides employment, vocational training, recreational, retirement, medical day care, and transportation services to developmentally disabled adults.  Volunteer with Providence Center and help make a difference in the lives of  those served by the Center. Volunteers are a tremendous asset to our programs. You may have gardening skills to help in our greenhouses, an artistic flair to assist in our Art Institute, an entrepreneurial spirit that can help a participant start his own business, or just the desire to be a friend to someone, spending time over lunch, working on the computer or reading. Volunteers must be at least 16 and must go through a background check. We are happy to work with eligible students fulfilling community service requirements but ask that they volunteer a minimum of 40 hours.
