Anne Arundel County Animal Control

Animal control provides a variety of services to the community, including adoption and foster programs for the benefit of domestic animals and offers a variety of volunteer opportunities that are available to assist the agency in carrying out its mission. Volunteers may perform many helpful tasks including, but not limited to, hands on interaction with the animals, showing animals to prospective adopters, assisting customers, answering phones, filing, photography and multi-media tasks. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, be able to meet the 16 hour per month requirement of volunteer service hours and be prepared to comply with all volunteer policies at Animal Control. Christmas Donations: Animal control is accepting donations of items for its “Give a Pet a Happy Holiday” program at its office on 411 Maxwell Frye Rd., Millersville, MD 21108 through Dec. 15, 2012. Items desired include canned and dry pet food, treats, bird food, crates, carriers, collars, leashes, bedding, pet and bird toys, and cat litter. Items may be dropped off during shelter viewing hours: Tues, Thurs., Fri. from 10 am-3 pm, Wednesdays., 10 am-6 pm, and Sat., 10 am-2:30 pm. For more information, contact [email protected] or (410) 222-8900.

 

Bello Machre

This nonprofit provides loving homes for adults and children with developmental disabilities. Bello Machre is currently offering a variety of volunteer opportunities.   • 10 am–3:00 pm, Fri., Dec. 14, 2012, Mailing Project: Volunteers are needed at the main office in Glenburnie, MD to help stuff and seal envelopes for the annual holiday appeal mailing. Lunch will be provided.
  • ·          5:00–7:00 pm, Sun.–Sat., Dec. 16–22, 2012, Annual Home Decorating Contest: Volunteers are needed during the listed evening hours to serve as judges for the Annual Bello Machre Home Decorating Contest. Families or group are welcome and will judge the homes on theme, presentation and creativity. Volunteers must have their own transportation and can choose the day and time as listed above to visit 3-4 homes in Anne Arundel Co.

 

Girl Scouts of Central Maryland

Serving all of Central Maryland, the Girl Scouts help girls develop courage, confidence, character and leadership skills that they will use throughout their lives. Girl Scout volunteering offers many flexible options, for both individuals and groups, whether you want to work directly with the girls throughout the year or lend expertise for a specific short-term project or event, even if your schedule allows you to only give a few hours. Training is provided and is tailored to each position. Volunteers should be 18 and older. In Anne Arundel Co. there is a current need for in school program specialists for hour long in school programs, one-hour weekly for as many as 6 weeks or as little as one, some travel, we will train. Also needed are in school survey administrators: one person for every school program to gather info and feedback from the girls in the program, grades K-5, needed for one-hour the first and last week of the six-week program. Lab Rescue of the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac

This all-volunteer nonprofit rescues, fosters and adopts out Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retriever-Lab mixes. Volunteers are needed to assist with Adopt-a-Lab Day on weekends; as transporters of dogs to and from vets, shelters, etc; evaluating dogs before accepting them into the system; conducting home visits in connection with adoptions; and to provide foster homes for Labs. Volunteers also assist in recruiting veterinarians, writing grants, helping with computers and networks, accounting, PR, posting flyers and more. The Metropolitan Washington Ear

This organization located in Silver Spring, MD provides free multi-media reading services for visually impaired, blind, or physically disabled people who cannot read print.  They help to bring visually impaired people into the mainstream, rather than segregating them from society.  For information about opportunities, contact 301/681-6636 during business hours or email [email protected], or visit their website, www.washear.org. Volunteers ages 18 and up can help out in a variety of ways:

  • ·        Readers for the Dial-In Newspaper and Magazine services: Volunteers are asked to take a brief audition and commit to a weekly shift of two hours to read The Washington Post, selections of The Wall Street JournalUSA Today, Time Magazine, People, and the Washingtonian Magazines into a computer, which will then be accessed by low vision or blind callers. Readers for the Radio Broadcast: Volunteers are asked to take a brief audition and commit to 2 hours per week to read magazines, newspapers, and other national publications to be aired on our 24-hour closed circuit radio broadcast and our world wide webcast.
  • ·        Speakers Bureau: Volunteers are needed to speak on behalf of the Washington Ear at local organizations, schools, churches, and to man information booths at local health fairs.  We only recruit speakers from our readers.  If you would like to be a member of the speakers bureau, you must first read for us for at least 6 months and become familiar with the organization.
  • ·        Office Help: Volunteers are also needed during office hours for data entry, special projects, or large mailings.

 

National Electronics Museum

The museum near BWI Airport serves students and the general public by collection, preservation and display of significant artifacts and literature and the commemoration of the creativity and dedication of pioneers and workers in the field of electronics. Volunteers, age 14 and up, are needed week days and weekends for education and outreach, for special events, as an administrative assistant, as collections assistants, and for visitor services. Oldies But Goodies Cocker Spaniel Rescue

This nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC rescues, provides medical care, rehabilitation and placement by adoption of homeless and/or abandoned cocker spaniels and cocker spaniel mixes to good homes in the Mid-Atlantic region. Volunteers are needed to provide foster homes until adoption, provide transport of animals, help with fundraising, and to attend adoption shows at PetSmart locations three weekends per month. Rude Ranch Animal Rescue

Rude Ranch Animal Rescue is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to the rescue, care and adoption of homeless animals in the Maryland and DC area. Our goals are to find permanent loving homes for adoptable animals placed in our care; to provide a safe haven and rehabilitation to feral and neglected animals rescued from abusive situations; and to put an end to needless euthanasia because of pet overpopulation. Current volunteer needs include; 1. Spay/Neuter Assistant to help monitor animals while they recover from surgeries, get our surgical instruments ready for use and to promote our spay/neuter clinic; 2. Fundraisers for community outreach to recruit sponsors (donors), especially to support the new spay/neuter clinic; and, 3.
