State Police Release Info On Fatal Accident This Morning On I-97

After family members were located and notified, Maryland State Police are releasing the identities of the victims of the crash involving the overturned truck and subsequent hit and run fatal early today in Anne Arundel County.

The deceased victim is identified as Wilmer R. Borgmann, III, 50, of Millersville, Md. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The surviving victim is identified as Scott J. Olczak, 31, of Pasadena, Md. Olczak was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment.

Olczak was driving a 2009 Isuzu street sweeper truck and Borgmann was the passenger northbound on I-97 between Rt. 32 and Benfield Blvd at about 3:15 a.m. today. The truck was owned by Mallary Pressure Washing Inc., of Crownsville, Md.

The preliminary investigation indicates the truck collided with a concrete barrier on the right side of northbound I-97 and the driver turned the wheel sharply to the left. The truck crossed the northbound lanes and entered the median, where it struck the guardrail and overturned.

Both men were ejected from the vehicle. Borgmann was thrown into the travel lanes of southbound I-97. State Police investigators believe from evidence at the scene that Borgmann had gotten back to his feet, but was unable to get out of the roadway before being struck by the southbound vehicle. Troopers also believe the vehicle that struck Borgmann has extensive front end damage, most likely to the hood and windshield. The vehicle is missing a windshield wiper, which was recovered at the scene.

Troopers believe evidence indicates there is little doubt the driver of the vehicle knew he or she struck someone. They say it is possible the victim’s body was propelled onto the hood of the striking vehicle and may have been transported down the highway. The victim’s body was found more than 200 feet from the point of impact.

Anyone with information about the driver or vehicle that struck and killed Borgmann is urged to contact Maryland State Police immediately at 410-761-5130. Callers may remain anonymous.
