UPDATE: From Anne Arundel County Police:

On December 20, 2012, at approximately 5:59 a.m., officers from the Western District responded to the intersection of Laurel Fort Meade Rd (MD Route198) and Russett Green in Laurel for a serious motor vehicle crash.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers located a juvenile male pedestrian lying on the southeast side of the intersection. Evidence suggests that the male was struck by a single vehicle while crossing the roadway. The vehicle remained on the scene. Paramedics attempted life saving efforts at the scene and transported the male pedestrian to Laurel Regional Hospital, where he later died as a result of the injuries sustained in this crash.

Further Investigation revealed that the juvenile male was attempting to cross the roadway in the crosswalk; however, he crossed against the pedestrian signals advising pedestrians to stop and wait before crossing. The pedestrian was subsequently struck by a Chevrolet Camaro traveling east along Route 198 approaching the intersection. The pedestrian was narrowly missed by another vehicle prior to being struck by the Camaro. The Traffic Safety Section was notified and assumed primary investigative responsibility for the crash. Preliminarily, there is no evidence to suggest that speed or impairment were factors in this crash on the part of the Camaro operator. Anyone with further information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Traffic Safety Section at 410-222-8573.

UPDATE: The Baltimore Sun is reporting that a teen was killed in this accident while crossing against the pedestrian signal. The teen reportedly was crossing at MD 198 and Russet Green East at 5:59am when he was struck by a Camaro.

An accident this morning on eastbound MD-198 (Laurel-Ft. Meade Road) just before the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Laurel has claimed another life.

Anne Arundel County first responders were dispatched shortly after 6:00am this morning. Currently all lanes are closed for the investigation. More details will be available when police issue their preliminary report.
