Police: Intruder Shot While Breaking Into Store. A man who police said broke in to a Glen Burnie store was fatally shot by an employee, investigators said. Police said Byron Phillip, 30, of Chester, was shot inside the Arundel Cards and Coin collectibles store in the 7400 block of Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard in Glen Burnie at about 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Boy Critically Injured In Christmas Night Crash. A 7-year-old boy suffered severe head trauma in a Christmas night crash in Odenton, police said. Anne Arundel County police said the boy was a front-seat passenger in a car that struck a parked tow truck around 10 p.m. Tuesday. Police said a preliminary investigation indicates the driver, Lisa Middledorf, 30, of Odenton, had been drinking and was drowsy. She underwent a breath test, and the crash remains under investigation.

Police Fatally Shoot Hammer-Wielding Man.  Police in Taneytown fatally shot a man acting disorderly with a hammer Tuesday evening, state police said. Edward Becker Jr., 26, was on Commerce Drive at about 8:30 p.m. when a Taneytown police officer approached him and ordered that he drop the hammer, state police said. A 911 call from Becker’s father led authorities to the scene. Becker’s father said his son had been drinking and that he was acting out of control.

New Maryland Laws Take Effect Tuesday. A Maryland law enabling parents to better protect their children from identity theft is among several taking effect next week. Same-sex marriage also will be allowed in Maryland next week, and another new law taking effect on Tuesday will allow veterans to show that status on their driver’s licenses
