THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION examines the facts and myths of this urgent public health issue, showing how obesity affects the health of the nation and the health care system. As part of its effort to help combat the obesity epidemic in our community, ACHI is hosting one screening of the four-part HBO documentary. “Part 3: Children in Crisis” examines the growing rates of obesity and its health consequences among U.S. children. The increase in these rates during the past three decades causes some experts to fear this may be the first generation of American children who will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.
ACHI consists of Annapolis Recreation and Parks, Anne Arundel Medical Center, Anne Arundel County Department of Health, Annapolis Pediatrics, The Pediatric Group and Anne Arundel County Public Schools. ACHI works with local organizations, healthcare providers, schools, and farmers’ markets to make the healthy choice the easy choice for Annapolis residents. The event will be an opportunity for attendees to learn about the health initiatives of ACHI and its individual partners.
In addition to the movie screening, Annapolis-based restaurants will offer signature dishes during the event. Azure at The Westin, b.b. Bistro and Metropolitan Kitchen & Lounge will showcase healthy options to eating by providing attendees with a meal beforehand.
THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION movie screening will be held Friday, January 11, 2013 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the “Pip” Moyer Recreation Center located at 273 Hilltop Lane in Annapolis. A comprehensive discussion and Q&A session will follow the screening, and attendees will be given tips and materials for managing a healthy lifestyle and for making positive changes in our community.
