Yet Another Pedestrian Hit, This Time In Edgewater

On November 28, 2012 at approximately 6:20pm, officers from the Southern District responded to a single vehicle collision with a pedestrian at East Central Avenue near West Shore Road, Edgewater, Maryland. The pedestrian was transported by helicopter to the University of Maryland-Shock Trauma where she is listed in critical condition. Officers from the Traffic Safety Section responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation.

Preliminary evidence indicates a 2005 Ford F-150 truck, driven by Michael Joseph Maszczenski Jr., of Stevensville, was traveling east on East Central Avenue in the furthest right travel lane.  A pedestrian, Susan Blanchard Harris, of Edgewater, ran into the roadway from Maszczenski’s right and struck the right side of the truck.  The truck’s right side mirror hit Ms. Harris’ head, and the mirror fell in the roadway after impact.  The driver stopped at the scene and awaited assistance from responding emergency personnel.

Pedestrian error is the primary contributing factor to this incident.  There is no indication that alcohol and/or vehicle speed were factors contributing to the driver’s inability to avoid the collision.  The secondary circumstances leading to Ms. Harris’ behavior before this incident, including any possible medical issues, remain under investigation by the Traffic Safety Section.
