Slaughter Across The Water 2012

On Saturday, November 3, Annapolis plans to take back its Tug-of-War bragging rights from Eastport and MainStreets Annapolis Partnership (MAP) is doing everything in its power to make sure that happens.

Billed as the longest International Tug-of-War over water in the world, the Eastport vs. Annapolis Tug was originally conceived by the residents of Eastport over a decade ago when the Compromise Street bridge was closed. Feeling excluded from the rest of the city, Eastport residents and citizens declared war against Annapolis and launched their plan to secede. From this rebellion, the Maritime Republic of Eastport was born.

Although the bridge has since re-opened, Eastport citizens remember the past by declaring a symbolic War of Independence. Thus, the annual Tug-of-War is a celebration of the geographical and, some would argue, philosophical differences between Eastport and Annapolis.

“Although the Tug is a competition for bragging rights on either side of the bridge, the event provides a great opportunity for the community to come together and have a fantastic time supporting local organizations,” Mayor Cohen said.

The following organizations are this year’s benefactors of the tug:

  • We Care and Friends
  • Save the Coconuts
  • The Polar Bear Plunge
  • MainStreets Annapolis Partnership
  • Eastport Elementary School
  • The Maryland Wing of the US Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol
  • Eastport Girls Club
  • The Berie House

Annapolis is recruiting loyalists with some brawn and a lot of spirit.  Tuggers can select a team for which they would like to participate (on the Annapolis side of course), and are asked to make a $20 contribution to a cause. The tugger will not only receive bragging rights for logging in the most wins from the seven-plus tugs scheduled, but will also receive a t-shirt for participating.  A party from11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. is held afterwards in the Susan Campbell Park and features live music, food, beer and wine.
