Get ready for guitar playing with both Brazilian and classical flair when Anne Arundel Community College hosts the second set of artists in its “World Class Jazz Series, the Art of the Jazz Guitar,” on Friday, Nov. 2.
Featured are Richard Miller, who brings the Latin sounds of his Brazilian heritage to his playing, and Jason Ennis, who offers a deep groove to a diverse background in jazz, blues, Brazilian themes and classical music.
Each of the master guitarists will share professional insights with the audience at free clinics from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Cade Center for Fine Arts Room 224. Then, they will perform at 8 p.m. the same day in the Humanities Building Room 112. The performances cost $15, with reservations suggested.
Miller was born in Rio de Janeiro to an American father and a Brazilian mother and moved frequently in Brazil, the United States and Puerto Rico. He brings that heritage into his music and is well known in the Washington D.C. region for his performances of both classical guitar music and popular Brazilian and Latin-American music. He earned a doctorate in music theory from The Catholic University of America and also has a Master of Music degree in guitar performance from the Manhattan School of Music.
Ennis is based in New York City where he is recognized for his unique sound in jazz guitar. A graduate of Middlebury College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music, he also has studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He released his debut CD, “La Voz de Tres,” in 2010 and is working on a recording of his trio, Trio Jota Sete as well as a recording of his own solo arrangements of jazz and Brazilian classics.
Coming up next in the series is Julian Lage, who tells compelling stories through his interpretative performances and recordings, on Feb. 22. The fourth and final part of the series is May 3 and showcases Frank Vignola, whom the legendary Les Paul named as one of his five most admired guitarists, and Vinny Raniolo, who has an eclectic style gained from his tours of the United States, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia.
The combination of jazz clinics and jazz performances is sponsored by the Jazz Studies area of the AACC Performing Arts department and the AACC Student Association.
