Honoring the 200th anniversary of the “Star Spangled Banner,” nationally known music historian Dr. David Hildebrand will discuss his latest project, “Music of the War of 1812,” at the Caritas Society meeting on Thursday, October 18, at 11:30 A.M. in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium, St. John’s College. Learn how a poem, penned by St. John’s alumnus Frances Scott Key after the bombardment of Ft. McHenry in Baltimore became the U.S. National Anthem. Why did Key witness the battle? How did a popular drinking song become the tune for the Anthem?

The public is invited to the program free of charge. Donations to the Weigle Book Fund would be appreciated. The fund provides required books to St. John’s students who cannot afford them. To reserve a seat, call 410-972-4505 or email[email protected].

Caritas members and their guests may make advance reservations for the program, social hour and full service luncheon (deadline Monday, October 15). The cost is $25. Send checks to Caritas Society, Box 2800, Annapolis, MD 21404. For luncheon reservation information, contact Pat Atherton at [email protected] or 410-849-8691.
