Ballet Theatre Kicks Off 35th Anniversary Season With World Premiere

Ballet Theatre of Maryland (BTM), the state’s premier professional ballet company, kicks off its mainstage season at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts with the world premiere ofThe Dancing Princesses the weekend of October 19-21.

Inspired by the Grimm’s’ fairy tale of princesses that mysteriously wear out their shoes every night, BTM’s Artistic Director Dianna Cuatto weaves a narrative rich in fairy tale staples – princesses, pixies, elves, dwarves, an epic battle between good (fairies) and evil (goblins), and an underdog hero.

Elayna, the youngest princess and main character, is played by BTM veteran Nicole Kelsch, now in her seventh season with the company.  Darien, the cobbler who uncovers the princesses’ secret, is played by Django Allegretti, in his third year with the company and his first year as a principal dancer.  Ballet Mistress Meagan Helman is enchanting as Lorien, the Fairy Queen who guides Darien while Alyssa Johnson-Taylor is delightfully wicked as the Goblin Queen.  Supplementing the professional dancers is a cast of children, who have been rehearsing throughout the summer and will dance roles such as townspeople, village children and butterflies.

Performance dates and times are as follows:

  • Friday, October 19 at 7pm
  • Saturday, October 20 at 7pm
  • Sunday, October 21 at 2pm

Immediately prior to the Sunday matinee, at 1pm, BTM will host a FREE Once Upon a Time party, sponsored by Chesapeake TASTE.  Children are invited to come dressed as their favorite fairy tale character – hero, princess or villain – and meet the dancers while enjoying some sweet treats.

Adult tickets start at $34.50 with discounts for military, seniors, students, and children.  Tickets can be purchased through the Maryland Hall box office: www.mdhallarts.org or 410.280.5640.
