St. John’s College will host a public screening of the independent documentary film Anthem at the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on their Annapolis campus November 14 at 8pm. The filmmakers will take questions after the screening. The event is free, but donations are welcome at the door.  Proceeds will go to Make Your Mark Media, a non-profit organization dedicated to changing current perspectives through independent filmmaking.

A production of Make Your Mark Media, Anthem tells the story behind Francis Scott Key’s creation of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and explores the role of music and patriotism during The War of 1812. The one-hour documentary will be broadcast locally on Maryland Public Television beginning December 19 and nationally on American Public Television in July.

Featuring musical performances and interviews with historians and music experts from the United States and Great Britain, Anthem delves into the music, people and events that influenced Key to write what would become the National Anthem of the United States of America.

Several Annapolis locations are showcased in the film, including The Sly Fox Pub, St. Anne’s Church, St. John’s College and the U.S. Naval Academy. Francis Scott Key is an alumnus of St. John’s College (Class of 1796).
