AA County Fair, 23rd Annual Halloween Happening, Oct. 19-21& 26-28, 2012
The haunted barn and hayride events will be held from 7–10 pm, Fri. & Sat., Oct. 19-20 & 26-27, and from 7-9 pm, Sun., Oct. 21 & 28, 2012 at the fairgrounds in Crownsville. In addition, kid’s birthdays may be celebrated at the Picnic Pavilion for cake and ice cream before you start your ghostly tour. Minimum of 10 advance tickets is required. Please clean up your area. Bay Community Support Services
Bay Community Support Services provides services and opportunities to children and adults with disabilities in Anne Arundel, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties. Volunteers are needed for a variety of positions including; placing and picking up donation canisters, special event assistance, office assistant, board of directors & committee members, companionship, assisting with recreational/crafts activities, handyman, gardening/yard work, and more. Bay Theatre Company
The Bay Theatre is a professional, nonprofit theatre company founded in 2002 in Annapolis, MD The theatre company also promotes theatre education for students of all ages and provides working opportunities for actors, designers, technicians and interns. Volunteers, age 16 and up, are needed for office assistance, one day per week, at the box office, and as ushers for performances. Also, hosts are needed for many of our visiting actors and directors that need a place to stay while they are in production. There is an immediate need for a House volunteer/manager. Cats R Us, Inc. This nonprofit feral cat rescue group operates two small shelters in the Annapolis and Arnold areas. The main focus is TNR (Trap, Neuter and Return). The shelter in Arnold is a “TNR” shelter, in which stray and feral cats already living outdoors are humanely trapped, then evaluated, vaccinated, sterilized, and eartipped for identification by veterinarians. This is a NO KILL facility and these cats will stay with CRU as long as it takes for them to find their forever home. Qualified foster volunteers are needed to provide foster homes. Volunteers, age 8 and older, are needed to assist with cleaning the shelters, to attend adoption shows at PetSmart in Annapolis, to make cat/kitten home deliveries, or to sit and spend time with wonderful cats. An adult should accompany volunteers younger than age 16. Training will be provided for shelter and adoption workers. Parental consent forms are required. disABILITY Awareness Day, Sat., Oct. 27, 2012
disABILITY Awareness Day 2012 will be held from 1–4 pm, Sat., October 27, 2012, during Disability Employment Awareness Month in October at Westfield Annapolis Mall. At the event County Executive John R. Leopold and the AA County Commission on Disability Issues will recognize Catherine Purple Cherry, a licensed professional architect and principal-in-charge of Purple Cherry Architects in Annapolis, who is known for her work with special needs populations and will receive the 2012 disAbility Awareness Day Award. The public is invited to attend the free 2012 disAbility Awareness Day events. More than 35 exhibitors who provide services to individuals with disabilities will have free information. Additional awards will be given to employers of people with disabilities as well as to churches and other groups that have made contributions to the disabled community. The public also can watch a demonstration by Canine Companions for Independence. The public can get answers on assistance with transportation, employment, housing, recreation, and access to other services during the event. Hammond-Harwood House
Volunteer docents, 18 and older, are needed to serve as weekend tour guides; those able to work to or more weekend days per month (Noon – 5pm) are preferred. Training is provided. Volunteers are also needed for publicity, children’s events, research and more. There are opportunities for volunteers to work at home on projects such as woodworking or sewing upholstered slip covers for pillows that are on display in the collection and more. Hammond-Harwood House also offers unpaid internships during the spring and fall semesters as well as in the summer. Students seeking unpaid internships must be currently enrolled in school and working towards a degree. The program makes every effort to offer experience in all aspects of small museum management. Harvest for the Hungary, Oct. 15 – Nov. 2, 2012
The Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County in cooperation with the Arundel County Public Schools Central Office Campaign is collecting nonperishable food and plastic/paper items (no glass, please) at its Heritage Office Complex location at Suite 130, 2666 Riva Rd., Annapolis, MD. The collected items are donated to the Anne Arundel County Food and Resource Bank. Cash donations are also being accepted. Lutheran Mission Society
This Christian health and welfare agency brings health and wellness to individuals, families and communities who are dealing with conflict and disease with the compassionate help of volunteer caregivers. Programs provide walk-in clients with food, clothing, health, counseling and educational services. In addition, volunteers, age 15 and up, are needed to help with sorting, storing, and packing donated food and other goods at the Annapolis location, 230 West St. Adult volunteers are needed for teaching parenting, literacy, health/wellness, use of computer technology, and more.
