Fatal Crash Snarls Annapolis Traffic

UPDATE: From our media partner WBAL-TV:

A three-vehicle crash that seriously injured at least one person has reduced southbound Interstate 97 to only one open lane.

I-97 is closed before the exit for eastbound U.S. Route 50. Police are directing all traffic onto westbound U.S. 50.

Skyteam 11 Capt. Roy Taylor said the backup on southbound I-97 extends five to eight miles.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The victim was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center with life-threatening injures.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

A serious crash has killed one person and shut down a busy interchange in Annapolis.

Shortly after 4pm rescue crews were dispatched to Route 50 Eastbound at Route 665 (Aris T. Allen Boulevard) for a serious crash. One patient was trapped and was flown to shock trauma by Maryland State Police helicopter.

At 5:10pm, we were notified that the accident was fatal and that roads are closed to allow for the investigation. It is not clear exactly which roads are closed, but from a photo obtained from CHART earlier (it has been taken offline for the investigation) it appears that it is Eastbound 50 right at the MD 665 ramp.
