A free concert of music, The Land of the Rivers, based on songs that represent the country of Bangladesh will be presented at 4 p.m. Sept. 16 at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, 801 Chase Street, Annapolis. An exhibition of arts of Bangladeshwill be exhibited. Doors will open at 3:30 with a DVD of Bangladesh.
The musicians are world-renown sitar player Alif Laila accompanied by world-renowned Tabla player Annubrata Chatterjee. Their program is composed of songs which are influenced by the folk melodies of Bengal fused with the ragas of South Asian classical music in a style known as Indian classical.
Alif Laila received her sitar training in her native country before moving to the United States where she continued her musical training. She has performed in many locations in this country as well as in India and Bangladesh. She has taught at the University of Maryland and throughout the Washington, D.C. area. She will be performing this fall at Yale University for the Distressed Children International.
Anubrata Chatterjee is the son of a tabla maestro and has become internationally known for his musicianship on this instrument as well as with a percussions group, Taal-india, which performs a blend of traditional and new age music.
