Chick-Fil-A Customers Show Support. A former presidential candidate is defending Chick-fil-A after the founder and CEO made controversial comments opposing same-sex marriage. While it is not a corporately sponsored event, former presidential candidate Michael Huckabee has declared Aug. 1 Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day for the founder’s stance on same-sex marriage, inviting more than 3 million people to participate on his Facebook page.

‘Joker’ Accused In Terror Threat Charged.  Maryland prosecutors said a man accused of threatening to shoot up his workplace and identifying himself as “a joker” has been charged with misdemeanor telephone misuse. Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said the charge is punishable by up to three years in prison. The charges against Neil E. Prescott were announced at a news conference Wednesday in Upper Marlboro.

MD Senate President Plans Fast Start To Special Gambling Session.  The president of the Maryland Senate is planning a quick start for next week’s special session to expand gambling, and is urging senators to drive home in the evenings to save money if they don’t live too far away. Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, D-Calvert, outlined scheduling plans for the first two days of the session in a memo to senators on Friday, when Gov. Martin O’Malley announced he would be calling a special session to begin next Thursday.

New Anne Arundel Police Chief Sworn In.  The new Anne Arundel County police chief was sworn in Wednesday. Larry W. Tolliver was joined by his daughter, Danielle Kane, and County Executive John R. Leopold during the ceremony.  Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Manager Doug Arnold administered the oath. Tolliver replaces James Teare, who announced his retirement, a move that ends an investigation into his conduct that arose after Leopold was indicted earlier this year.
