Annapolis Film Festival

The mission of the Annapolis Film Festival is to seek independent films, features, documentaries and shorts, that will inspire, enlighten and entertain all audiences on a variety of topics, promoting Annapolis as a cultural arts center. We are in immediate need of volunteers to manage the inaugural SHORTS CRAWL — our September 23, 2012 fall fundraiser. Six West Street bars/restaurants are opening their doors to this new Annapolis film experience. Guests will go from one venue to the next where they will enjoy drinks, light fare and viewings of a group of short films. Volunteers are needed to help with registration, sales, stage/venue management, group and schedule control, and audio-visual/technical support. Anne Arundel County Literacy Council

Literacy tutors are needed for combating adult illiteracy; after completing training, you make your own schedule and locations with your assigned student or you can tutor at local detention centers, in small groups, and ESLtutoring. ·         Sat., Sept. 29 and Sat., Oct. 13, 2012, Tutor Training: The next tutor training consisting of two sessions is scheduled for at Woods Memorial in Severna Park. The new tutor training format is twelve hours in length and covers both Basic Literacy and ELL.  Those interested in attending this training should email [email protected], or call 410-798-0408.

 

Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. Fri., Aug. 17, and  8 A.M.–5 P.M., Sat. & Sun., Aug. 18-19, 2012,  CERT Training: The introductory session from 7-9 P.M. on Fri., Aug. 17, and two-day course on Sat.& Sun., Aug. 18-19 are being held at the AA County Fire Training Academy, 415 Frye Rd., Millersville, MD 21108. Anne Arundel Medical Center

Anne Arundel Medical Center’s Marketing and Communications office is seeking volunteers to assist with a variety of ongoing projects. The activities range from administrative and distribution to being part of the creative process and giving counsel. Volunteers must agree to give a minimum of four hours per week, complete an orientation process, and be able to walk between buildings. Experience in MS Excel & Word and talents in proofreading or other public relations activities would be helpful. To learn more, call 443-481-5050.

 

City of Annapolis, Emergency Preparedness Exercise, Tuesday, August 14, 2012

The Annapolis Office of Emergency Management is seeking volunteers to play disaster victims and evacuees

for a city-wide simulated hurricane emergency preparedness exercise from 7am–1 pm on Tues., Aug. 14, 2012.  Preferred age for participants is age 16 and up, with those under age 18 to be accompanied by a parent. Volunteers will report to the Pip Moyer Recreation Center, 273 Hilltop Lane, Annapolis, MD 21401. Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts

Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts has openings in several volunteer positions.  Currently the opportunities include ushering with performing arts, assisting at special events, and occasional help with Visual Arts. We will be holding three new volunteer orientations. For ushering, there will be an additional training date TBD.  At our orientations we will discuss details of these volunteer positions, and they will be held:

§         5:30 – 7:00pm, Thurs., August 9 & 14, and Sept. 27, 2012, Volunteer Orientations: Training will be held at Maryland Hall, 801 Chase St., Annapolis. §         6-11 pm, Friday, September 7, 2012 Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts Alive 14Maryland Hall needs many volunteers for set up on the two days prior and servers the night of the event. Arts Alive is Maryland Hall’s largest single fundraiser, proceeds supporting year-round community arts programs.  This year will be “An Evening in Paris” in our tent under the stars on Maryland Hall’s front lawn.  The Paris-themed party includes entertainment, silent and live auctions, a raffle and appetizers all evening with signature dishes and drinks by the area’s finest restaurants, hotels and caterers. For more specifics or to sign up, please contact Louise White, Volunteer Manager, Maryland Hall; email:  [email protected]. or 410-263-5544, extension 23.

 

Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults (UCF)

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults provides free support programs, education, and resources to benefit young adults affected by cancer, as well as their family and friends, while promoting awareness and prevention of cancer.  The UCF relies on volunteers to help us spread our message hope and fight. If you have free time and are committed to enhancing lives by supporting, educating and connecting young adults, and their loved ones, affected by cancer please contact us. The UCF offers many different volunteer opportunities that range in time commitment. Some volunteer opportunities require certain skills. Young Leaders United, Inc.

Young Leaders is a non-profit providing mentoring for students in the 5th or 6th grade and continuing through high school. Volunteers, at least 16 years of age and a junior in high school, are needed to provide mentoring services. A one-year commitment of at least 1-hour per week is required for both mentors and peer mentors.  Mentorcandidates must fill out a mentor application, have a personal interview, provide three references, and undergo background and motor vehicle checks. Peer Mentors serving as tutors in their schools must also have an “A” in the subject in which they will provide tutoring and a recommendation letter from a teacher.  Mentors will be provided an initial 8-hour training session and quarterly 4-hour training sessions.
