On July 31, 2012, at approximately 11:15 a.m. officers from the Northern District took the suspect into custody in the area of the Glen Burnie Mall located in the 6700 block of Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie after receiving a call from a citizen. UPDATE 12:27pm 7/31/2012: According to WMAR, ABC2, James Zito has been apprehended:

Anne Arundel County Police have found James Zito, the man they say stabbed his mother multiple times. Zito was arrested without incident at the Glen Burnie Mall.

UPDATE: We have received unconfirmed reports that the suspect has been located and taken into custody near the Glen Burnie Mall. We will update this when we get confirmation from the police department.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect suddenly became violent for unknown reasons and restrained two family members inside of the home before later stabbing his mother multiple times in the upper body. The suspect initially fled on foot toward the rear of the residence and then was observed fleeing toward Red Birch Road. The 54-year-old female victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Numerous patrol officers have conducted an extensive search of the area with assistance from K-9, Aviation and bloodhounds and continue to search for the suspect. Area residents are asked to immediately contact 9-1-1 with information on the whereabouts of James Arthur Zito. There are concerns that Zito may harm himself and he is believed to possibly still be local, on foot and armed with a knife. Detectives have since obtained an arrest warrant charging Zito with First Degree Assault and related charges.
