Baysox Take First Game, Second One Suspended

The Bowie Baysox (54-50) took the first game of a doubleheader against the Akron Aeros (63-42) 4-2 and then the second game was suspended in the bottom of the first due to rain.

The Aeros struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning.  With the bases loaded and no one out, Juan Diaz singled to left to knock in two runs and give the Aeros a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Baysox answered right back.  Manny Machado started the inning by reaching on an error and Rhyne Hughes walked.  With Buck Britton batting, each base runner moved up a bag on a wild pitch.  Britton then knocked in Machado with a groundout to second.  Caleb Joseph followed with a single to center that knocked in Hughes and evened up the score 2-2.

After four scoreless innings, Caleb Joseph broke the 2-2 tie with a lead off home run in the top of the 10th inning to give the Baysox the lead.  With one out John Ruettiger singled and Jonathan Schoop doubled to put two runners in scoring position.  Ty Kelly then knocked in an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2.

Jason Gurka threw two scoreless innings to pick up the win.

Kyle Landis got the loss giving up two runs on four hits in two innings.

With one out in the bottom of the first inning, rain hit again and the game was suspended until tomorrow at 6:05 p.m.

The Baysox are currently on a four-game road trip.  All of the games can be heard on www.baysox.com.  They will return home on Tuesday, July 31 for a six-game homestand that begins with four games against the New Britain Rock Cats.
