Former Chief Of Police Returns To Post In Anne Arundel County.  A former Anne Arundel County police chief who went on to serve as superintendent of the Maryland State Police is returning to the helm. County Executive John Leopold’s office announced Thursday afternoon the appointment of Larry Tolliver as chief of police.

Man Charged With Transferring HIV To Boy. Police have arrested a 36-year-old man who investigators said used a smartphone app to find and have sex with a 13-year-old boy, and officials said the man may be HIV-positive. Steven Douglas Podles, 36, was charged with sexual solicitation of a minor, second-degree sex offense and related charges after the boy’s parents accused Podles of having sexual contact with their son.

Police Release Photo, Little Else, In Vi Ripken Abduction. Police in Aberdeen released a photo Thursday of a man believed to have bound and abducted the mother of famed Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. and drove her car miles away from home. Violet Ripken, 74, of Aberdeen, was taken by a man between 7 and 8 a.m. Tuesday after he pulled out a handgun and forced her into her own car, police said.

Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte Respond To Rivalry. U.S. swimmers Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte are preparing to battle it out for the gold in their first race, the 400-meter individual medley on Saturday. Phelps has said he’ll retire after the London Games, and that he wants to go out a winner. “The biggest thing that we want to do is be able to sit back and enjoy the ride and enjoy this last year, and we’ve been able to do that,” Phelps said.
