Schoop’s Grand Slam Not Enough For Bowie

Despite a grand slam by Jonathan Schoop in the sixth inning the Bowie Baysox (44-47) came up a run short and fell to the Reading Phillies (48-43) 7-6 on Friday night.

The Baysox got out to the early lead in the top of the first inning for the second straight game when Robbie Widlansky hit an RBI single to knock in Antoan Richardson to give them a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first inning the Phillies scored three runs to take the lead.  Jiwan James led off with a double and then scored with one out on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Tripp.  With two outs, Darin Ruf doubled and Cody Asche gave the R-Phils a 3-1 lead with his first career Double-A home run.

The Baysox got within a run in the fifth inning.  With two outs, Schoop reached on an infield single and Buck Britton walked.  Widlansky then hit his second RBI single of the game to make the score 3-2.

In the bottom half of the inning the Phillies answered with a pair of runs.  With runners at the corners and one out Cesar Hernandez hit an RBI single and then Tripp hit his second sacrifice fly of the game to make the score 5-2.

The Baysox took the lead back in the sixth inning.  Rhyne Hughes and Zelous Wheeler reached base back-to-back to start the inning and then with two outs Richardson drew a walk to load up the bases.  Jonathan Schoop then hit the Baysox third grand slam of the season to make the score 6-5.

In the seventh, the R-Phils scored two runs to take the lead back.  With runners at the corners and one out Ruf singled to knock in James and tie up the game.  Cody Asche then reached on an error and Leandro Castro drew a bases loaded walk to force in the go-ahead run and give the R-Phils a 7-6 lead.

Jay Johnson picked up the win pitching 1.1 scoreless innings.

Tyler Knigge threw a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save for the R-Phils this season.

Chris Petrini got the loss throwing 2.1 innings and allowing two runs, one earned on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

LHP Rick Zagone (1-2, 5.00) will get the start tomorrow against LHP Mario Hollands (2-2, 6.55).

The Baysox are currently on a seven-game road trip.  All of the games can be heard on www.baysox.com.  They will return home on Thursday, July 19 for a seven-game homestand that begins with four games against the Binghamton Mets.
