On July 8, 2012, at approximately 5:06 p.m., officers from Eastern District responded to the 8000 block of Bussenius Road in Pasadena for a report of a suicidal subject. While en route witnesses reported that the subject discharged a firearm.
Upon arrival, several officers observed the subject in the driveway. The subject was given numerous verbal commands to show his hands, but subsequently ran into his house and refused to come outside. Witnesses indicated that the subject was extremely distraught and discharged a handgun inside of his garage and in his backyard. The subject then began driving erratically around his yard and striking items on his property with his vehicle prior to the arrival of officers.
The Police Department’s Conflict Negotiation Team and Special Operations Section were dispatched. Citizens in the surrounding area were made aware of the situation and asked to stay in their homes. Members of the community were extremely cooperative and accommodating, providing access for a staging area.
Negotiators attempted to establish verbal and phone communication with the subject over a period of several hours. The subject was not cooperative and even taunted officers on several occasions indicating that he wanted to be injured. At one point, the subject exited the home and tactical officers deployed less lethal options in an effort to end the situation, but the subject retreated back into the home. Ultimately, at approximately 10:18 p.m., the suspect exited his residence, was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment. A booking photo is unavailable at this time.
