Annapolis Light House Shelter

Many volunteers are needed during the week of Jun. 25-Jul. 1, 2012 to shelve pantry items collected during a St. Mary’s food drive. In addition, volunteers are wanted who are interested in providing, preparing and serving dinner on either Sun., Jul. 22 or Mon., Jul. 30, 2012.  Also, volunteers are desired on Sundays from 11:30a.m. –1 p.m. to collect food donations from farmers at the Freshfarm Market, at the Donner Parking Lot, located at Compromise Street and City Dock, and bring them back to The Light House. Volunteers are also needed to accept and process donations to our Career Closet on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 9 a.m.– noon. Baltimore Project Homeless Connect, August 2, 2012

Baltimore Project Homeless Connect is being held on August 2, 2012 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., to provide a single location where multidisciplinary service providers collaborate to serve and empower people who are homeless and at risk of homelessness.  This event is conducted by the City of Baltimore, the Mayor’s Office, and United Way ofCentral Maryland and is sponsored by KPMG LLP. The event will provide one-stop access to: medical services, legal services related to homelessness, housing information and eviction assistance, assistance obtaining birth certificates and Maryland State Identification, employment assistance, including resume development, interviewing, and job placement, child support assistance, financial information, tax preparation and assistance, and community information from many groups in the Baltimore area. Hundreds of volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks on Aug.1-3, 2012 to make the event a success. The deadline to apply to volunteer is July 16, 2012. To learn more, email [email protected].

 

Center of Help (Centro de Ayuda)

The Center of Help is a non-profit which provides a variety of social services to the Latino community in the City of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County with support offices in Annapolis and Glen Burnie. Volunteers are needed for a variety of functions in the office and as ESOL and academic achievement educators, writers to prepare articles/releases for the press and prepare grants, and to assist with media/marketing/public relations, including political liaison; event and parent-school involvement coordinators as well as social services advocates are also needed. City of Annapolis, Emergency Exercise, Aug. 14, 2012

Emergency Preparedness Exercise volunteers are needed to play hurricane disaster victims and evacuees on August 14, 2012, from 7a.m. –1 p.m. at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center, 273 Hilltop Lane, Annapolis, MD 21401. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Maryland

This nonprofit is dedicated to finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research.  Volunteers from Anne Arundel County are especially needed to serve on the JDRF Maryland Chapter Board of Directors and for upcoming special events and outreach.  Office volunteers, 14 years and older are needed in the Linthicum and Towson offices. Volunteers are also needed throughout the year for family outreach activities, and for fundraising events. The Maryland Food Bank

The Maryland Food Bank is looking for volunteers at its location in Halethorpe (So. Baltimore) on Mon. through Fri. for 3 hour shifts from 9:00am – 4:00pm to help sort and box food.  Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age or older and closed toed shoes must be worn. Critical need for donated products and funds: Because donated products are at a low level and the demand is up due to economic conditions, soup kitchens, food pantries and emergency shelters are not getting the food that they need to feed the hungry in Maryland communities.  For more information about ways to donate, visit the web site at: www.mdfoodbank.org.

 

Peace Lutheran Church

Volunteers are needed to teach English to Spanish speaking residents in Glen Burnie.  The program runs from September to April every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Training is provided for anyone that is interested.  No prior experience is necessary just the desire to help. If anyone is interested in donating there time for this wonderful and worthwhile community initiative please call Deacon Gail Wilson, Parish Administrator at(410) 766-3283.  The church is located in 416Wellham Avenue, Glen Burnie, MD 21061.

 

Salvation Army

Volunteers at Salvation Army location at 511 S. Crain Hwy are needed to serve lunch to the homeless on Wed. and Fri. between 11:30 am – 1:30 pm. Volunteers can also assist with homework at the Boys & Girls Club between 3–5 pm, Monday through Thursday, after background checks.  They can also help with arts & crafts and sports from 3-8 pm Monday through Friday.  Nonperishable food items and donations of toiletries, clean clothing, large baby diapers, wipes, etc. are always needed. South County Assistance Network (SoCan), Lothian

SoCan and area churches help persons in their community with emergency needs, food pantry or other services.

SoCan needs volunteers at their facility at St. James’ Church in Lothian on Thursdays and Saturdays, from 9 am to Noon, to stock shelves, bag food and donate food and other items for the pantry. Call Dottie Fender at 301-261-5265.
