The World Oceans Day festivities began with a Spa Creek cleanup. The cleanup took place from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Truxtun Park in Annapolis.
“Sperry Top-Sider has a passion for the sea and a priority to protect it,” said Karen Pitts, VP Marketing. “We were thrilled to co-host our World Oceans Day efforts with United By Blue and give back to the beautiful community of Annapolis that we call home.”
I really enjoyed being part of the cleanup at Truxtun Park and I LOVE that Sperry and UBB are collaborating, it feels good to be a part of something so unique and for such a good cause. It was great to see a diverse group of volunteers come together to participate and also great to hear that they all had heard about the clean up in various ways. Annapolis is a community that takes pride in their parks and waterways, but 261 pounds of trash just goes to show that there is always a difference that can be made.

After the dirty work was complete, it was time to celebrate. From 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Sperry Top-Sider hosted a World Oceans Day Happy Hour at their downtown store located at 36 Market Space. Volunteers and downtown shoppers took time to appreciate our planet’s biggest ecosystem over light fare and drinks in the nautical inspired store.
“A partnership with a company that is so focused on our world’s oceans and waterways like Sperry Top-Sider is a natural fit for United By Blue,” said Brian Linton, Chief Trash Collector and Founder. “Cleanups are part of our DNA at United By Blue, and working with a large and iconic brand like Sperry Top-Sider helps us reach more volunteers and remove more ocean and waterway trash. Plus, our co-branded t-shirts are some of the finest products we’ve ever made.”
World Oceans Day is just the beginning for United By Blue and Sperry Top-Sider. June 8 also marked the official start of sales of United By Blue and Sperry Top-Sider’s co-branded organic t-shirts both online and at Sperry Top-Sider retail shops around the country. For every t-shirt sold, United By Blue and Sperry Top-Sider will remove one pound of trash from oceans and waterways around the country through co-hosted cleanups. In April, United By Blue, Sperry Top-Sider and 80 community volunteers removed 3,602 pounds of trash from Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn, NY.
Since 1935, Sperry Top-Sider has been the leading brand of footwear for those with a passion for life in, on, and around the sea. Nowadays, their products go beyond their signature boat shoes, ranging from polo shirts to dresses. United By Blue is an ocean-friendly brand of apparel that removes one pound of trash for every product sold. Since May 2010, the Philadelphia-based brand of apparel has removed over 110,000 pounds of trash from oceans and waterways in 12 states during 70 cleanups. United By Blue and Sperry Top-Sider are making waves amongst the apparel world, starting with one organic t-shirt and pound of trash at a time.
