CORRECTION: The initial headline indicated the church was in Severn. It was actually in Gambrills. We regret the error and have made the correction.
On June 11, 2012, at approximately 8:00 p.m., officers from the Western District responded to the Faith Community Church located in the 1300 block of Waugh Chapel Road in Gambrills for a report of possible child abuse.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with the mother of the victim, who reported that her nine-year-old daughter and a juvenile acquaintance were waiting in the church office the prior day around 12:00 p.m. when a 15-year-old male suspect entered the office, removed the nine-year-old victim against her will and took her into an adjacent room, where he restrained the victim and began choking her. The victim’s acquaintance reported the incident to a relative, who responded to the church to safely remove the victim from the situation. The incident was reported to church officials and then to the Police Department.
Detectives from the Western District began an investigation into the incident consisting of several interviews and it was determined that the suspect had restrained and assaulted the victim at the same location a few weeks prior to the most recent incident. After consultation with the State’s Attorney’s Office, the 15-year-old male suspect from Severn was charged on a juvenile citation with Kidnapping, First and Second Degree Assault, False Imprisonment and Reckless Endangerment. The suspect has since been committed to the Cheltenham Youth Facility in Prince George’s County.
